Match Report

FC United won the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup for the first ever time with a 1-0 victory over Stalybridge Celtic at Boundary Park on Thursday evening with fullback Jake Williams scoring the only goal.

Williams’ early goal was enough to seal the trophy for the Reds in a tight, evenly contested final that came to life late on with chances for both teams.

The game’s only goal came less than three minutes into the game as Williams hit a cross-cum-shot from the right wing which seemed to stay in the air for an age, clearing over Callum O’Neil in the Celtic goal.

It could and possibly should’ve been 2-0 minutes later as Tomi Adeloye got into space on the edge of the box, but fired his powerful effort just over the bar.

Despite taking the lead early, it was Celtic who had a couple of decent chances in the first half to get the games next goal, firstly a corner was headed just wide and just after a headed effort from a corner went just over, serving as a reminder that despite the early goal this game was definitely still going to be a contest.

The second half began a bit slowly with both teams struggling to get on top of the game, but as the half wore on both teams went looking for the goal that they both needed and this made for a great contest that turned into end to end action going down the stretch.

Adeyole had a great chance as he timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap. An inch perfect Thomson ball from midfield saw the striker one-on-one with O’Neil, who managed to stop Adeyole’s first effort before his attempt from the rebound was put out for a corner.

The Reds then had a string of half chances with Tom Greaves just shooting wide, before captain Jerome Wright looked to cap his 400th appearance for the club with a long-range effort, but saw his strike go high into the stand behind the goal.

Celtic went close again late on, but the headed effort (aerially from set pieces seemed to be their main threat most of the night) was saved easily by Ryan Schofield.

The scenes at the full-time whistle were great to be a part of as Wright celebrated his milestone appearance by lifting the trophy and perhaps the player who understands the most what this club is all about took the trophy into the fans at the front of the stand as players, staff and the owners celebrated as one.

Website Man of the Match: Jake Williams – Scored the only goal, but also provided a great defensive display on the night to earn the honours.
