Volunteer Profile: Huw Griffith

My name is Huw Griffith, aged 64. I was a social worker for 33 years and retired in November 2021. I have been volunteering one day a week at FC United since December 2021.

Initially for the first six months I assisted Jimmy divoting and mowing the Broadhurst Park pitch. He was very patient and supportive explaining the process. Since his role changed I have undertaken more general duties.

I regularly empty the metal recycling bins and other bins replacing bin bags etc, within the stadium. I also litter pick the Main Stand and paddocks, the 3G pitch, stadium car park and grass verges. I find litter picking to be strangely therapeutic! Other roles undertaken have included weed spraying, painting and washing down seats in the Main Stand.

Whilst acutely aware of my low skills set, I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to undertake physical work which I have thoroughly enjoyed and which has given me a sense of achievement. Post retirement volunteering has helped me establish a structure to my week and is definitely something I look forward to.

I would like to particularly thank Jimmy and Mark who have both been very helpful and welcoming. Also Natalie and Laura who are very strong advocates for the club’s volunteers.

I have recently returned to weekly volunteering after a 3 month break following a hip replacement. During this enforced lay off I realised how much I missed the voluntary work. In particular I missed the positivity of ‘FC people’, both staff and volunteers, which makes the club special in my view. As a result of my voluntary work I feel a greater connection to the club.

I am lucky enough to be going to Milan - Forza FC United!
