CYCM Atherton: Preview

Fancy a bit of exercise in the new-look space under the SMRE ahead of our first league game of the season? No, us neither*. However you can join us to roll out the red carpet for Spin Klass, our band for the day, who describe themselves as 'a collection of John McClane fanatics, budgie enthusiasts and sub station controllers who couldn't get enough Devo, XTC and Talking Heads'.  You can find out more about Spin Klass at https://linktr.ee/spinklass, and they're on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNpBPy0JzbOm_KYCoBMZyUg.  Atherton fans we welcome you too of course, not least because Spin Klass are playing The Snug in Atherton on 24 September so you can get a sneak preview.

We've turned the stage by 90 degrees this season to make best use of the reshaped space, which means that the band will now be facing the audience. This improves the sound and the feeling of it being a gig; it does mean that if you're sat down and want to see the band you'll need to get up and move towards the stage by about 2.15 when they're due on.  After our 'test event' before the Donny game we've had a few ideas for how to make the new space work better, and we'll be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this as well. It's bound to take a few goes to get the new set-up fully sorted, so all feedback will be genuinely welcome.

Before the band, at about 1.45, we will be turning the tables on our quiz maestro Karl, and asking him questions for a change. All the answers can of course be found in Karl's cornucopia of FCUM facts, his new book From RMI to Rimini, which offers a full run-down of each of our 17 seasons along with a profile of the 373 players who played at least 1 competitive game for the club during that time.  Copies will be available on the day price £17 (£1 per season is a proper bargain), with all proceeds going to club funds.

And alongside our reverse quiz and our band there will be tater ash pies, cheese pies and muffins. And really you need to come along just to marvel at our new Soup Kettle full of mushy peas...  See you Saturday; turnstiles open at 1pm.

*though the Malcolmses team will be climbing up a few ladders on the day to get our flags up ready to welcome you all.
