The Foodhub celebrates Diwali with the Diwali Foundation's 'Basket Brigade'

FC United’s community Foodhub has this week received £3000 worth of food hampers from the Diwali Basket Brigade: an annual event organised by The Diwali Foundation, which will be shared with anyone who needs support. Diwali is the Festival of Light, which is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists; the celebration lasts 5 days and symbolises the spirit of light over darkness. One of the traditions of the festival is to share food and sweets with friends and neighbours, and the community made monetary donations to create the hampers. Deepak Parekh, founder of the Diwali Basket Brigade, said “Diwali is a time of celebration and happiness. Unfortunately, there are many families in our local communities who have little to cheer about, struggle to make ends meet and feel rejected. Diwali Basket Brigade is our small effort to support and spread the message of Diwali - the message of hope, happiness and giving” 2020 has seen a huge expansion to the Basket Brigade scheme, originating in Birmingham and this year casting the net wider. FC United’s Community Officer Vinny Thompson said: “We are one of the first food banks outside Birmingham to take part in the Festival of Light celebrations with the Diwali Basket Brigade. FCUM is about making friends not millionaires, and this shows that help knows no colours” The baskets contain high quality healthy food, a candlelight and Covid related products such as hand gel and hygiene products. They are being sent out with our regular food hub deliveries this week. FC United is very grateful for the donation and the partnership with The Diwali Foundation - thank you and Happy Diwali!
