Reds' Women Progress to 1st Round proper with late winner from captain.

On the day that the 2019/20 FA Women’s Cup was decided with Manchester City beating Everton after extra time at an empty Wembley, FC United women extended their club record run in the 2020/21 competition by beating Chorley Women to progress to the First Round Proper.

As with the men’s game the day before, kick off was preceded by a minute’s applause in memory and celebration of the life and achievements of United and England legend, Nobby Stiles.

It was a largely uneventful first half in terms of scoring chances. In the early exchanges, Flynn was well wide with a shot from Mills’ cut back. Shortly afterwards, FC captain Kirsty Chambers, scorer of a sensational winner direct from a corner kick last weekend, tried her luck from a similarly acute angle on the left but this time it fizzed across the goal. However FC maintained possession and the ball was worked back to the left for Bailey to lay back for Fields to get in a shot wide to the left of goal.

The half was into the last ten minutes before there was another flurry of mostly half chances. Cunliffe chipped a ball over the back line for Bailey to chase but Chorley keeper Camp smothered before she could get there.

Jade Parker tried her luck from outside the area but fired wide. Chorley then counter-attacked and Bell pounced on hesitancy between FC defenders to hit one from distance but without enough power to trouble Ainsworth in the FC goal, who saved comfortably.

Perhaps the best chance of the half was the one that fell to Bailey after Cunliffe’s overhead attempt went skyward but fell for the FC number 10 to hit a rocket shot that Camp touched over the bar. Then just before the break Chambers cut into the right side of the area and fired a low shot that was saved by the keeper.

The deadlock was broken 7 minutes into the second half. Jones made a break for Chorley down the inside left channel and squared inside for Flynn to pick her spot and score with a shot out of Ainsworth’s reach.

Chambers led a break for FC and sent a ball forward for Bailey to chase but again the keeper got there first. The Chorley defence seemed well set up to protect their lead and were not going to be easy to break down. The visitors also found an opportunity to get forward and win a corner from which Nickson headed just over.

It wasn’t looking like being FC United’s day. However that all changed with thirteen minutes left on the clock. A ball forward looked to be comfortably shepherded by Searson and Carlow for Chorley but Bailey showed persistence in pursuit of the ball and got the better of the number 2 to poke a low shot past Camp to level the scores at 1-1.

In the pouring rain, the goal seemed to put new belief in both the team and the fans, cheering on the Reds from outside the perimeter fence. Richardson fired right-footed from outside the area but without enough power to trouble the keeper. However not long afterwards an impressive quick-passing move from the Reds ended with Chambers taking everyone by surprise with a snap-shot from outside the area on the left that seemed to deceive everyone including the keeper who remained motionless as the ball took one bounce and flew in off the inside of the far post.

The draw for the First Round Proper has paired FC United with a home tie against the winners of the postponed Fleetwood Town Wrens v Liverpool Feds tie. The team are scheduled to be back in league action on Sunday with a trip to Merseyrail FC though, at the time of writing, it’s not known how the new COVID restrictions will affect things.

FC Player of the game: Chelsea Patient - a solid display at the back, particularly in the first half during periods of Chorley pressure and possession.
