Stoppage time goal knocks FC United out of Integro League Cup

A 92nd minute goal from Jordan Chappel gave Sheffield a shock 2-1 victory at Broadhurst Park and saw a surprising exit from the Integro League Cup for FC United on Tuesday evening.

The Reds came into the game on the back of a late victory at Whitby on Saturday, but manager Neil Reynolds decided to make several changes ahead of the tie, perhaps looking ahead and keeping everybody in the squad fresh for the vital part of the season.

The first half was a fairly even contest, with FC United having more possession but the visitors looking dangerous on the counter.

The visitors took the lead five minutes before the break as Mitchell Dunne worked into space on the right of the box, before firing low past goalkeeper Cameron Belford.

The second half began with a couple of changes for the Reds as Regan Linney and Luke Griffiths came on to the pitch and added some extra attacking options. Linney had a vital role in the equaliser as he dribbled into the box, forcing a clumsy challenge from the Sheffield defender in the box. Paul Ennis fired home from twelve yards to level things up and give FC the upper hand.

Reno immediately brought Tunde Owolabi on and despite having more possession in the Sheffield half of the pitch clear cut chances were few and far between and the visitors kept looking dangerous on the break throughout.

With the game in the second minute of stoppage time, the visitors broke down the right and a ball cut back across the penalty area left Chappel with a simple tap in to ensure the South Yorkshire outfit went through to the next round.

A disappointing way to lose, but the Reds must now focus back on the league. They immediately get the chance to bounce back with a visit to Buxton on Saturday afternoon.
