Match Report
For the second time this season the FC Youth Team ventured to Mossley’s Seel Park for the second leg of a double header. For the second time they came away victorious, only this time it was league points at stake rather than cup progress.

The lads started in the same fashion they had played the first game by pressing early and challenging their opponents to play the ball out or just give it back. All too often the latter option was chosen as it took until the around the half hour mark for the ball to spend any length of time in the FC half.

Again the lads scored early, this time in the sixth minute as Joshua Matthew ran on to a pass from Theo Kidd into the box to fire home. He offered the travelling support a Nani like celebration but spoiled it completely with a step back on landing.

FC then pressed relentlessly with Luke Walker coming close on two occasions, but how the lead wasn’t doubled on twenty minutes is a mystery to us all. Andy Lee hit the post with one shot and the rebound found Theo in the six yard box with the goal at his mercy. Unfortunately the resulting shot was more like a golfer taking a sand wedge from the St Andrew’s Road Hole Bunker; it cleared the crossbar with ease.

They did score a second goal as half time approached, this time it was left back Josh Smethurst who burst into the Mossley box. His first shot was saved by Curtis Hickman in the Mossley goal but Josh pounced on the rebound and slotted home.

Mossley came out for the second half showing a little more determination and pulled a goal back within ten minutes. A free kick about 25 yards out was heading for the top corner until it was turned over splendidly by Jonathan Beisty. Unfortunately from the resulting corner, Jordan Fitton found space in the box and hit a shot across the goal and in at the far post.

That there were no further goals was not down to the lack of effort on either side, James Brooks, Connor Naughton and Matthew Boland all went close. Matthew Hassall; sent on in the 81st minute to bring fresh legs to the FC midfield, picked up a caution before your correspondent had finished noting the change that saw him come on with Sam Howell.

A busy end of season programme sees them away at Prescot Cables Valerie Park on Thursday, at Salford for the first cup final on Sunday and closing the league programme with a home game against Morecambe at Wright Robinson College on Tuesday. The remaining cup finals are at Burscough on Sunday 13th and back at Salford on the 24th.
FC United of Manchester: Jonathan Beisty, Richard Smith, Josh Smethurst, Josh Matthew, Kyle Cunningham, James Brooks, Luke Walker, Connor Naughton (Matthew Hassall 81 mins), Theo Kidd (Sam Howell 81 mins), Matthew Boland, Andy Lee. Sub not used: Andrew Farrimond.

Goals: Josh Matthew and Josh Smethurst

Caution: Matthew Hassall.
