Match Report
The Development Squad welcomed Garforth Town to the Nicholls Football Centre for a Lancashire League pitch. However once the whistle blew for the start of the game the welcome ended as four goals from Jon Poizer with two from Matty Boland and one from Mike Taylor gave the reds a 7-1 win.
FC Had the better of the first ten minutes, Frank van Gils had two efforts as the reds found their range. However Garforth probably should have opened the scoring on ten minutes, breaking clear of the home defence Chris Taylor saved the first shot and a follow up was cleared off the line for a corner.
Shortly afterwards United took the lead as Scott Cheetham attacking from left back fired a crossfield pass to right back Sam Hibbert who knocked it quickly to Mike Taylor in the penalty area for a calm shot past Jack Bentley in the visitors goal. The lead was doubled on half from the penalty spot after Van Gils was tripped and Boland sent Bentley the wrong way. The ball was in the Garforth net again three minutes later as Richard Smith tapped in a Poizer free kick but was disappointed to see the linesman flag for offside.
Poizer was the star performer scoring the next four goals although Boland could easily have kept pace with more accuracy in his shooting. Bentley had an easy save from one shot when a pass to the right for Van Gils could have been more productive but other efforts were generally off target. It was 3-0 just before half time as a nicely weighted pass from Taylor allowed Poizer to beat the offside trap and slot in.
Charlie Doyle replaced Daniel Maynard just before the half time whistle and featured strongly in the second half. Particularly as with less than a minute of the second half gone he won the ball with a determined challenge and the ball found its way to Poizer who shot across the keeper and in for the fourth goal.
Garforth had their best period of the game in the first twenty minutes of the second half with several good attacks, a free kick and a header from a corner just over but it was FC that scored again on 53 minutes. Van Gils picked out Hibbert on the right and his driven cross was headed in by Poizer. Garforth scored five minutes later, Chris Taylor cleared one break but was unable to do something as the ball was quickly returned and Arnold Nsimbe found the net. For the next ten minutes they tried to make it more than just a consolation without success. FC United’s constant pressure and high tempo play saw to that.
Sam Hibbert hit the cross bar with an effort entirely of his own making on 66 minutes, intercepting Bentley’s clearance and driving forward with a shot from 25 yards that left the visitors keeper stranded.
As the visitors tired the sixth and seventh goals came in quick succession with fifteen minutes to go, Boland crossing for Poizer to score and Boland getting his second shooting under the keeper and scoring was complete although the reds could easily have had more; Poizer andCheetham coming close more than once.
