FC United through to Emirates FA Cup third qualifying round
FC United progressed to the third qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup with an outstanding 2-1 victory at former landlords Curzon Ashton from the division above. The Reds started well, with Morgan Penfold on his debut following his loan move from Barrow looking sharp on the right. On four minutes he played the ball to Regan Linney who saw his cross deflect just wide. Chris Doyle was next to chance his arm with a long shot, which was always a good move in the wet conditions, but it was straight at goalkeeper Theo Roberts. The deadlock was broken on 11 minutes when Penfold took a quick throw in that found Charlie Ennis who crossed for Linney to blast home first time. The lead lasted just three minutes though when the ball found its way to Nash left-back Matthew Waters who slid the ball past FC United goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe to equalise. The first half progressed much as it started, FC seeing most of the ball and neither side creating any clear chances, though Adam Dodd did see a free-kick tipped onto the ball and away for a corner. The second half started as the first ended, FC on top, Ennis seeing a cross-cum-shot saved by Roberts. Still FC attacked and still the home defence stood firm. Dodd saw a free-kick palmed away just ahead of Curtis Jones but with 72 minutes on the clock, FC finally broke through when Linney was flattened with a late challenge in the left hand corner. Ennis' free-kick sailed into the top corner to make it 2-1. There was possibly a slight brush off a defender but this was certainly a goal to be claimed by Ennis. Two minutes later, he almost scored again but his shot screwed just wide. Curzon tried to get back into the game, Darren Stephenson firing a shot that Lavercombe dealt with. On 83 minutes, Michael Fowler broke free with just a defender and Ennis for company. As he reached the box he seemed unsure whether to pass or cross and his ball was dealt with by the Curzon rearguard. The chances continued to come for FC, Linney twisted into the box but hit the side netting and Fowler saw his turn and shot well saved by Roberts. There was time for one last heart stopping moment deep into injury time when a throw in from the left saw a Curzon header in the six yard box go over the bar. This was a superb performance from FC United, every player playing their part in a performance that was a million miles away from the previous game at Hyde. Website man of the match: could be a collective this week as all contributed but for his overall performance and for an assist and goal, Charlie Ennis takes the plaudits. Report by Steven Wood
