Match Report
Will Shawcross opened the scoring with a 30 yard free kick that Jordan Latham could only parry into the corner of his net after just 40 seconds against Curzon Ashton. Unfortunately the reds were unable to add to that and second half strikes from Max McGreal and Nathan Driscoll meant the visitors took away the points with a 2-1 win.
This was always expected to be a sterner test for the young reds, average age 17, than recent games and although the result eventually went the wrong way, the first half gave the management team little to reproach them for. Certainly not at half time when the reds had dominated possession. Curzon Ashton had a flurry of half chances in the middle third of the first period but an FC United mistake looked the only way they would score.
More of the same was expected in the second half. It certainly started that way as another long range strike from Shawcross ended on the roof of the net and a drive from Chris Hill was turned over his bar by Latham.
On 56 minutes the game changed as Curzon broke from their own half beyond the FC defence. McGreal won a race with Sajjad as both closed in on the ball the former then left with an easy finish. Another defensive lapse was punished by Driscoll on 64 minutes to give Curzon Ashton the lead. Despite the best efforts of the young reds it was one they were not to surrender.
