Match Report
AFC Liverpool 1 FC United of Manchester 2

The reds of FC United Youth travelled to Formby in Liverpool to take on the reds of AFC in the North West Youth Alliance on Sunday. Playing in our blue strip the teams took the field in almost a mirror image of the Merseyside derby. Although this game saw AFC Liverpool score the final result was of equally scant consolation for the red half at the other end of the East Lancs Road.

Taking advantage of last week’s break in the youth team schedule, Manager Chuks Akuneto took in a game between New Mills and AFC. He was able to report that a physical game with plenty of long balls to the strikers could be expected, which is precisely what happened. The home side were able to force two corners in the first four minutes, which were successfully dealt with. Unfortunately, the next attack wasn’t FC were behind for the first time this season. A free kick from the centre circle found an unmarked Jake Corke whose header nestled in the bottom corner of the goal. This FC side is full of ball players who given a chance to play will create plenty of chances, but now their physical capability and desire was being questioned.

The remainder of the game answered that as the home side, for all their pressure only created two clear chances, when in the second half a clear header at the far post from a corner struck the woodwork and Andrew Farrimond dropped gratefully on the rebound and five minutes later he was at his athletic best to turn a goal bound shot over the bar.
After the goal FC started to play football and had three good chances in the next ten minutes but failed to hit the target and it was perhaps surprising that the equaliser didn’t come until the 40th minute. It was however, worth waiting for. Harrison Reeve got the ball in the centre of the pitch and burst through two stiff challenges before the ball broke to Scott Cheetham, who surprised himself and the rest of the FC following by hitting a screaming right foot drive into the top corner from outside the box.

FC took the lead in the first five minutes of the second half when a seemingly innocuous corner was met with a display of goalkeeping frailty not seen since, well, Edwin van der Saar on Saturday actually. The ball seemed to just hit his fist and drop at the far post where Harrison Reeve was first to recover from the surprise and tapped home.
AFC Liverpool, who were top of the league prior to kick off, dominated the remainder of the possession; anxious to demonstrate how they had got to that lofty position although apart from the two chances described above the FC defence held firm. The lead probably should actually have been increased as substitute Darius Furniss had two good chances and a free kick from Ryan Lyons was headed over the bar by a Liverpool defender.

After around six minutes of injury time the final whistle blew and the lads came away with a hard earned win which sent a message to the rest of the league that whilst they can play they won’t be easily outfought. A man of the match award would have to go to the whole team.
