Match Report
FC lost 6-5 on penalties AET

Whilst most of you were watching the first team beat Barrow, the Youth Team was also in cup action on Sunday. In a NWYA Open Cup tie against lower division opposition in Rylands FC, the reds were first pegged back to 1-1 in the closing minutes, before losing 6-5 in a penalty shoot out after 30 goal less minutes of extra time.

It is often the case that higher rated opposition brings out the best in a team and Rylands weren’t about to be the exception to that rule. Starting brightly they had several chances in the first ten minutes, forcing several corners before FC even had a worthwhile attack. Indeed it was the fifteenth minute before Daniel McLoughlin and Jake Haslam combined to get the ball even close to the opposition goal; Jake’s shot being about a yard wide of the far post. Ten minutes later FC took the lead as Daniel crossed to the far post and Lee Worswick headed home.

For the remainder of the 90 minutes there was not a lot of goalmouth action, but Rylands continued to prove the more determined side and got a deserved equaliser in the 89th minute and could easily have won the game in injury time.

Extra time would have passed without incident but for another goal keeping injury. FC’s Aron Buckley-Smith collapsed after a simple catch with no-one near him. Soreness behind the knee meant he was helped off the pitch to await an ambulance which took him to hospital. 2nd grade medial ligament damage appears to be the diagnosis and while it is hoped that surgery won’t be needed he is likely to be out for a good three months. Having already used all three substitutes Ryan Lyons took over goalkeeping duties and was needed to come out and make a couple of clearances as again Rylands looked more likely to score.

Then came the lottery of penalties; although both sides failed with their second effort the score progressed to 6-5 in Rylands favour before the next and final mishap.

FC United of Manchester: Aron Buckley-Smith, Ryan Lyons,Carl Fitton,Jordan Dainty, Luke Kolakowski (Ryan Westwood 55), Lee Worswick (Darius Furniss73), Josh Burke, Jake Haslam, Daniel McLoughlin (Matt Boland 88), Harrison Reeve, Obied Elghreaw. Subs not used Andrew Farrimond and Christopher Smith.
Goal: Lee Worswick (26 mins)
Booked Daniel McLoughlin (86 mins)
