On Tuesday 7th November, kick-off 7:45pm, FC United are away to Salford City in the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup QF - Admission is pay on the gate £7 Adults, £3 Conc and Free for under 5’s.
On Tuesday 7th November, FC United return to Manchester Premier Cup action against National League North leaders Salford City. As we’re current holders of the Cup after beating Stalybridge Celtic in the Final back in May, we received a bye for the first round of matches, so enter the competition at the Quarter Final stage.
This will be our first competitive fixture at the newly renovated Moor Lane, although we did play a friendly there back in July with Tommy Greaves scoring a spectacular bicycle kick in a 2-1 defeat.
We come into the game off the back of a 4-1 loss to Stockport at Edgeley Park on Saturday where we found ourselves two down in the first ten minutes and three down at half time. Despite a spirited second half performance, we couldn’t emulate our Cup comeback of the previous month.
Our opponents Salford City scored a last minute goal to win 1-0 home win against Alfreton Town on Saturday to move them four points clear at the top of the league. They’ve now won five matches on the bounce since their surprising 3-2 defeat at home to Leamington at the start of October. One of the five was in the last round of the Manchester Premier Cup, where Salford ran our 2-0 winners against Irlam.
Salford Goalkeeper Max Crocombe remains sidelined for Tuesday’s match. He’s serving a suspension for his highly publicised sending off at Braford PA last week for urinating, yes urinating, behind the goal.
FC United have played Salford City six times in competitive fixtures, with both sides winning three apiece. Our first two meetings in 2006/07 in the North West Counties Div One (SC 2 FC 1) and FA Vase (SC 2 FC 3) were played at the Willows in Salford due to the large expected crowds of 4,058 and 2,799. FC won the return league fixture 4-2 at Gigg Lane where Giggs (Rhordri) tore them apart, scoring a hat-trick.
In 2012, the two sides met again in the FA Cup at Moor Lane with FC winning 3-2 in front of a crowd of 1,298. Last season in the National League North, City were victorious in both games winning 1-0 at Moor Lane and 3-0 at Broadhurst Park.
FC United’s caretaker player/manager may use the Tuesday’s fixture to blood a few youngsters and increase the competition for places ahead of our three vital league games against Telford, Alfreton and Gainsborough over the coming weeks. Defender Zac Corbett will miss Tuesday’s game as he’s still suspended after being sent off at Chorley two weeks ago. Michael Connor, Steve Irwin and Danny Wisdom are all injured.
We welcome a new addition to the squad, Manchester born, Tyrell Palmer (20) an attacking midfielder who previously played for Bolton Wanderers U/18s.
The squad for tonight is:
Allinson, Firth
Baird, Brady, Hughes, Fagbola, Senior, Walker,
Kay, Jones, Glynn, Lindfield, Palmer, Logan,
McCarthy, Gilchrist
