Match Report
On a late summer evening in Cheshire, FC United of Manchester Reserves lined up against Witton Albion for the second time this season. The result was the same with the young reds winning 5-2. The visitors scored through Dean Hope, Sam Summerbee, Jack Tinning and a Connor Martin brace, Sam McClennan and Jay Matthews scored for the home side.

FC United starting brightly, testing Gary Spotswood in the home goal twice before opening the scoring from a corner in the 11th minute. Hope and Sam Summerbee exchanged passes in the corner before the former cut inside and struck a low drive across goal and into the far corner with Spotswood rooted to his line and a broad beam of satisfaction from the FC bench.

Witton Albion came into the game after the first quarter of an hour and had a number of chances throughout the remainder of the half. Matthews headed in after 27 minutes from a yard but was ruled offside and quite how McClennan failed to end the half with a hat-trick of his own is hard to understand.

That said, there was no further scoring in the first half and after some fine tuning in the dressing room, if United started the first half quickly, the second was greased lightning. Summerbee ended a smart move with a simple tap in with barely two minutes on the watch and was followed by the move of the match for the third. A superb ball from Chris Hill, set Charlie Doyle free down the right wing and his cross was finished by Martin on 50 minutes.

If the Witton keeper could have done better for the first goal he produced a fine save to deny Tinning soon after when set up by Martin. That however was a cue for Witton to open their account as McClennan finally found the time and space to shoot home from the edge of the box.

FC United responded instantly, Tinning shot from outside the box and whilst the effort was probably going wide Martin was quick to divert it in to the net, but was correctly judged to be offside. Tinning did restore the three goal lead soon afterwards, turning another Doyle cross towards goal his effort rebounded off post and keeper before nestling in the back of the net.

That perhaps should have been the end of the contest but Witton got nerves jangling again as Matthews broke beyond the back line and slotted past an advancing Ben Jupp. Fortunately Witton were unable to threaten the FC goal again and Martin completed the scoring in injury time.

The team management gave man of the match to Chris Hill because whilst Martin grabbed the glory no striker can score if they aren’t getting the chances. Hill provided a tireless link between front and back lines and ensured the chances were there to be taken.
