Match Report
Opening proceedings in a newly formed Lancashire League South Division, FC United reserves welcomed Witton Albion to Broadhurst Park. They came with nothing and left with most of it as the reds recorded a 3-1 win. Goals from Connor Martin, Charlie Doyle and Dean Hope trumped Sam McLennan’s strike just before half time.

The visitors were the first into action, a shot from Ben Moubeb around the penalty spot somehow screwed wide and although Fuad Sharif was even more wasteful on fifteen minutes FC had the majority of possession and chances although none truly tested Thomas Hull in the Witton goal.

The visitors did take the lead on 40 minutes when a counter attack pulled a smart save from Jupp. Sadly the resulting corner was not dealt with and McLennan was able to prod the ball in to the net.

It was a completely different story in the second half as the reds benefitted from the groundwork done in the first half. That said there was some good fortune in the equaliser. An exchange between Hope and Doyle saw the latter clear to cross into the box. The ball clearly hit a Witton arm and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Witton protests saw him consult with his assistant on the level of intent and the decision stood. Connor Martin confidently shot low to the keeper’s right and in despite Hull guessing correctly.

From then on it was nearly all FC United, Martin came close with a 30 yard chip soon after and there was no fortune about FC taking the lead just before the hour mark. Dean Hope took a home free kick about twenty yards into the Witton half, the visiting defence switched off and completely failed to pick Doyle’s run from the half way line into the box. Hope looped the ball into the space between the Witton Defence and goalkeeper and Doyle was free to pick his spot.

The third goal was possibly the move of the match, Daniel Cooke played a splendid ball down the right wing for Doyle to run on to and cross into the box, returning the favour for Hope who found it impossible to miss.

There weren’t many more chances after that, a couple of deflected efforts that may or may not have been on target but went out for corner kicks. There was however a display by the whole side of how to close a game out by simply keeping the ball and denying the opposition the chance to build any momentum.
