Match Report
It was thought to be a clash of the two teams expected to battle for the NWYA Premier Division title at Cantilever Park, Warrington today. The home side emerged victorious by 3-2 but at the end the Warrington Manager was delighted to have escaped with the win because FC had dominated the game in every way bar clinically finishing the chances they created.
FC United started brightly with Daniel Maynard creating two chances in the first two minutes. Warrington responded with a couple of early chances of their own before taking the lead in the 10th minute when Dylan Glass, who had been a thorn in the FC side in last season’s St Bride’s clash, controlled a long kick from Tony Vaughan in the home goal and ran on to shoot across Josh Broadbent and in at the far post. The reds responded quickly
The game changing moment was a decision in the 18th minute that only the referee could understand as Kial Callacher was sent off. An FC move had broken down in midfield and Warrington played the ball forward, beyond the FC back four. Kial chased back with Warrington’s James Anderson, the slightly stronger home player was winning the tussle and was happy to get a shot away but disappointed to see Broadbent make the save and no more than that. The referee however then decided to blow for a free kick and issue Kial with a red card despite being on the wrong side of play to see any contact and despite a lack of protest from any Warrington player over the incident.
FC dominated the rest of the half only to be wayward in their finishing, Mike Taylor battled hard and saw a shot blocked and out for a corner after a neat move with Kane Hughes from a Matt Musialowski throw after twenty five minutes. That said he could easily have followed Kial off the field ten minutes later when he slid in for a challenge that merited no more than a free kick.
After George Shaw came on for an Injured Musialowski in the 38th minute FC continued to dominate but chances were spurned and the sides retreated to the dressing room with the score at 1-0. The second half started with another change as Yousif Yousif came on for Josh Smethurst.
Unfortunately the home side doubled their lead in the 51st minute. A hopeful ball looked to be running through to Broadbent on the edge of his area only to hold up in a strong wind forcing him to come out to head the ball. Sadly a poor header was returned with interest as Christopher Bendell eventually fired home.
FC responded well, two minutes later Yousif wriggled into space to provide a chance which Kane Hughes fired over. Kane made amends a minute later pouncing on a loose ball created by persistent harrying by Andy Lee to make it 2-1. The two goal cushion was quickly restored after a break down Warrington’s left provided a cross which found Oliver Wells on the edge of the box, his first time drive back across Broadbent nestled in the corner of the goal.
That was the cue for the final substitution as Liam Ellis came on for Andy Lee and the cue for an almost nonstop assault on the Warrington goal in which Yousif was to figure prominently, shooting wide twice within a minute His luck did take a turn for the better as the game wore on providing a cross which Taylor fired over when it seemed easier to score and then controlling a long kick from Broadbent to feed Kane Hughes who shot wide with fifteen minutes to go. Two minutes later however he did pull a goal back as Hughes took a turn as provider. Then Liam Ellis was unlucky not to equalise with a fierce drive that was heading for the top corner until turned round by Vaughn.
FC continued to huff and puff but the Warrington house didn’t blow down. Warrington, with their direct style always posed problems for FC and could have scored more, Robert Winrow had a good chance to make it 4-2 but as the Warrington manager was heard to say when the final whistle went; “We survived.???
So victory and three points went to the home side and it was clear for all to see that the two sides would continue to slug it out for the title. Perhaps the decisive battle will come at the Lancaster Club sometime in the New Year or perhaps nerves will get the better of one or the other in the intervening clashes. Either way, in observing the season so far it is hard to see any other side beating both clubs for top spot.
