FC United win at Warrington Town
Fleetwood Town loanee Will Russ scored the only goal as FC United made it two wins in two league games with a 1-0 victory at Warrington Town, despite finishing the game with 10 men after Luke Griffiths saw red.
Manager Neil Reynolds had rung the changes during the week, bringing in loanees from Burnley and Chester and releasing a couple of the squad signed over the summer. Both the new signings made an impact, Finley Anderson had a strong game at left back and Wyl Stanway – in for the injured Dan Lavercombe – certainly made his mark in goal.
Warrington started well, skipper Sean Williams firing over. As the half wore on, FC came into the game, Regan Linney firing at Tony Thompson after a good move on 20 minutes.
Just after the half hour, the woodwork came to the rescue of the home side when a shot from Joe Rodwell-Grant hit the post. Michael Donohue was next to try his luck but volleyed wide after playing a one-two with Linney.
In first half injury time, a cross from the right into the FC box, saw the ball headed back to Stefan Mols, but his overhead volley flew over the bar.
It was the home side who started the second half brighter, the dangerous Isaac Buckley-Ricketts was played into the box but saw his shot saved well by Stanway. Just after the hour mark, a dangerous cross was fizzed into the FC box, but thankfully there was no-one on the end of it.
On 64 minutes, FC took the lead when a move found Linney who fired towards goal, the ball was blocked on the line by a Warrington defender but happily teenage forward loanee Will Russ was on hand to force home his first FC goal in his second appearance for the club.
From that point, as to be expected, the home side took the initiative to force the equaliser, with FC looking to counter. Buckley-Ricketts found himself in on goal again, Stanway tripping wide.
With just over 15 minutes to go, Williams fired in a free-kick that took a deflection, seemingly wrong-footing Stanway, but somehow he stuck out his right hand and kept the ball out.
Two minutes later, the Stanway, Buckly-Ricketts battle continued, the FC custodian doing brilliantly to tip the ball wide.
In stoppage time Griffiths was on the end of a poor tackle from Harris. As the players fell to the ground, the FC midfielder retaliated with an elbow to the head. Once peace had been restored, and as is seen so often, the retaliation was punished with a red card, whilst the tackle was only deemed a caution.
Harris and Griffiths continued their exchange of views post the final whistle with Harris finally receiving the red card he probably should have had moments earlier.
It was a deserved three points for FC, with more emphasis on attacking play, with a strong rearguard defence when required.
man of the match: a few candidates this week. Donohue, Rodwell- Grant and Andy Halls all putting in big performances, but Wyl Stannway takes the award with four great second half saves that ensured the points returned to Broadhurst Park.
