FC United up to sixth after Linney double downs the Dabbers

FC United are just one win away from the play-off places after a Regan Linney brace secured all three points on a brisk night in Nantwich.

After a weekend trip to South Shields fell foul to a frozen pitch, FC got back into league action looking for a first win since they welcomed Ashton United to Broadhurst Park on Boxing Day.

The Reds travelled to the rearranged game against the Dabbers having welcomed Curtis Jones and Jack Degruchy back to the squad, and in what would turn out to be a game of attrition, a compact game. These names would return to play key roles.

Linney broke the deadlock on six minutes when he pressed goalkeeper Tom Booth into a rushed clearance which rebounded off the FC striker and looped back into the net for 1-0.

The home side responded well to going behind as they began to hold the ball and work chances. Tom Scully worked some excellent chances for the home side, but these were well dealt with by the FC back line, and ‘keeper Dan Lavercombe.

Having returned to the Nantwich side for this game, former Reds forward Dan Cockerline looked to add to his three goals already this term, but again the home side couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Cockerline’s stoppage time headed was received gratefully into the chest of Lavercombe as he had the goal at his mercy.

Down at the other end, the Reds finished off the game as it headed into the dying embers through who else but Linney? The FC United talisman scoring his   25th goal of the season. Linney raced down the right side of the pitch, cut inside and worked scored a great strike from a very tight angle.

This win takes FC up to sixth in the table, just three points off the play-off places. They can climb above Warrington Town on goal difference if they beat their promotion rivals at Broadhurst Park on Saturday.

Website man of the match – the award has to go to Regan Linney. His clinical finished ensured all three points came back to Broadhurst Park.
