Match Report
Tom Davies and Tom Greaves got a goal each and there was a spectacular own goal as FC United beat Frickley Athletic 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gigg Lane.

After a goalless first-half, Frickley fullback Steven Gardner broke the deadlock for FC United ten minutes after the break by lobbing his own goalkeeper from 50 yards. Five minutes later, Davies headed home from a corner and Greaves put the icing on the cake in the 90th minute.

It was the away side who started the brightest and had half a chance on six minutes when Davies seemed to mistime an interception and almost let in the ever dangerous Gavin Allott but Jon Worsnop was alive to the danger and smothered the ball.

As the half wore on FC retained the majority of possession and won a good number of corners. From one of these Liam Brownhill found the head of Davies but his header rattled the crossbar. There followed a series of half chances, Astley Mulholland seeing a cross/shot saved by Tom Woodhead and Greaves head just wide.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Callum Byrne looked to have opened the scoring as he hit a shot from the edge of the box that beat Woodhead but sadly crashed against the bar and away to safety.

On 55 minutes the deadlock was broken in a bizarre fashion as a Frickley corner was cleared by Greaves towards Rhodri Giggs. As the ball bounced the Frickley left back Steven Gardner attempted a back pass from 40 yards that sailed over the head of Woodhead and into the net.

Just after the hour the lead was doubled when a corner from Brownhill was headed in by Davies. To their credit Frickley did continue to contribute to the game, Allott looping a header towards goal that Worsnop did well to tip away.

As the game wore on though, the home side were creating the bulk of the chances, Lee Neville crossing for Mike Norton to head just over and Matthew Wolfenden shooting at the keeper after good work from Matt Walwyn.

In the last minute of the game the win was sealed when Norton broke down the right and crossed for Greaves who took his time, turned and fired past the keeper.

After a dour first half, FC turned up the pressure and the Reds were very good value for the three points to keep the unbeaten league run going.

Report by Steven Wood

Man of the match - Liam Brownhill. Strong in defence and set up many attacks with surging runs. Put in some great crosses and corners also to worry the Frickley defence.
