With more 300 votes from supporters all over the world – from Salford to San Francisco and Shanghai – you’ve selected FC United’s Legends Squad to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary and we can now reveal your choices.
There was always going to be stiff competition for places, some selection headaches and numerous fantastic players missing out in your final squad. Here are the players that you chose as your 20th Anniversary Legends.
Don't miss your chance to watch some of these FC United Legends take on Manchester United Legends on Sunday 18th May!
Here’s a brief look at each of your selections:
1. Sam Ashton
With more than 230 appearances between August 2006 and May 2011, our most capped goalkeeper claimed the number one spot comfortably. Ashton had many memorable moments for the club including saving a late penalty at Brighton & Hove Albion to earn us a replay in the second round of the FA Cup in November 2010.
2. Jerome Wright
The club’s record appearance maker with exactly 400 matches and 82 goals was almost guaranteed a place in the team, it was more about whether you would select him at left-back or left-wing. It was a fairly even split but such is his versatility, he’s been put in at left back to accommodate a very special left winger.
3. Adam Dodd
Dodd made 118 combatative appearances during four seasons at the club. It would have been even more had it not been for the Covid-19 pandemic and the fact he suffered a heart attack! Dodd missed seven months of football due to the latter, but made a triumphant return in January 2023. It’s that kind of fighting spirit which secured his place in your Legends team. Traditionally a leftback, we’re sure he could adapt to playing on the right.
4. Charlie Raglan
Raglan held off strong competition from Curtis Jones and Adam Jones to claim his place in the line-up. He only spent the 2013-14 season with us, making 42 appearances and scoring five goals, but he certainly made a lasting impression before departing for League One Chesterfield.
5. David Chadwick
Chaddy was the most popular name on the teamsheet with 62% of the vote. Everyone needs a nutter in the middle and Chaddy was ours for seven seasons. He made 211 appearances and scored 24 goals. No wonder he was nailed on for the starting XI.
6. George Thomson
Explosive midfielder Thomson scored 32 goals in 72 appearances for FC United between 2015 and 2017 before being snapped up by Harrogate Town. He’s been at the Sulphurites ever since and has helped guide them to two promotions to the Football League.
7. Carlos Roca
The right-wing berth in your Legends team goes to Carlos ‘feet like lightening’ Roca. The diminutive forward dazzled supporters and opponents alike for five seasons, scoring 43 goals in 204 appearances, which is even more impressive considering he was substituted on or off the pitch in 145 of those matches.
8. Matthew Wolfenden
With 94 goals in 305 games over seven seasons, Wolfy is the club’s third highest goal scorer and has the second most appearances (305). With a record like that, it’s no surprise that he made it into the team.
9. Tom Greaves
He scored goals just for fun, so it seems. The club’s record goalscorer found the net an incredible 103 times in 274 matches and went on to become player-manager. Greaves was your most popular choice up front. Not bad for the lad who broke our hearts with Bradford Park Avenue in the 2012 play-off final before stealing them with FC United.
10. Rory Patterson
It may be 17 years since ’Mr Mystery’ originally left the club but his legend lives on. Patterson scored 99 goals – including one from the halfway line straight from kick-off – in 129 appearances before making a brief return to the club in the winter of 2015 for eight games. The man with no name will always get a game in your Legends Squad.
11. Regan Linney
Linney became a firm fans’ favourite during his four years at the club, scoring 61 goals in 133 appearances. During his final season, he scored 25 goals in 33 matches which led to National League club Altrincham snapping him up for a fraction of his market value at the tail end of his contract.
Substitutes:
12. Liam Brownhill
Brownhill narrowly missed out on a place in the starting XI, but with three solid seasons and 133 appearances from 2013 to 2016 he’s worthy of his place on the bench.
13. Dan Lavercombe
Lavercombe made 104 appearances between 2020 and 2023 and won the Russell Delaney Supporters' Player of the Season Award in his final season. His last match for the club came in the San Siro in the Fenix Trophy before he moved back home to the south-west, where he’s just helped Truro City to win the National League South.
14. Curtis Jones
Jones made 159 appearances for the club between 2019 and 2024. He won manager’s player of the season and players’ player of the season during that time. He captained the team on numerous occasions and is solid back up on the bench.
15. Michael Norton
Norton will forever be remembered as our FA Cup hero after scoring the last-gasp, stoppage time winner in our 3-2 victory over Rochdale in the first round of the competition in November 2010. He scored 93 goals in 221 appearances for the club and is well worth his place in the squad.
16. Tunde Owolabi
Owolabi completes the squad. The Belgian made a long-lasting impression on the FC United faithful by scoring an incredible 34 goals in 41 matches in the 2019/2020 season before departing for a professional contract with then Scottish Premier League club, Hamilton Academical.
