United leave it late for victory
A cracking 85th minute goal from Kyle Wilson left the travelling FC United supporters more than satisfied with a 1-0 victory over Boston United in arctic conditions at York Street on Saturday afternoon
In the only league game to played in the Unibond Premier, the Reds would surely be hoping to continue with recent impressive form following last week’s comprehensive away victory over Worksop. FC would also be looking to overcome Boston after failing to do so in the two previous encounters between the sides.
In the first couple of minutes, it was the home side who appeared to take the lead with a corner swung in from the right meeting the head of on loan striker Gary King for a header past Sam Ashton. However, Boston’s celebrations were cut short when the goal was disallowed for an apparent push in the box.
It was Boston who offered the majority of attack in the opening stages; however, the league’s leading scorer Kyle Wilson had a chance to put the ball away for FC following a free kick on the left. The ball came into Wilson just inside the area and the FC number 9 hit the ball against the keeper’s chest for it to rebound into a sea of danger inside the Boston penalty area. Unfortunately, FC were unable to put the ball into the back of the net as Boston managed to scramble it away.
As FC United began to settle down, chances began to come their way, including a curling shot on goal from Adam Carden. The United midfielder received the ball on the right and skilfully brought it inside before unleashing a shot from the edge of the area that curled just wide of the keeper’s right post. Tommy Turner also had a chance to put the ball away for the Reds when he received the ball in the box: unfortunately Turner could only find the side netting with his shot on goal.
As the half drew to a close, Simon Garner prevented Boston from going one nil up with an excellent saving tackle. Boston’s Ollie Ryan was through on goal and was almost certain to score if not for Garner’s well timed tackle inside the area.
Following a fairly even first half, both teams started brightly after the break, with both goals being put under pressure in the first few minutes. Trouble ensued on the pitch following a foul on FC’s Danny Warrender, and a scuffle broke out between players. Adam Carden and Boston’s Ollie Ryan and Ryan Clarke were booked following the incident.
An Adam Carden ball in from the right almost resulted in a Boston own goal when Matt Bloomer put the ball against his own post. Boston were then given a chance to break and did so, going four on one inside the FC area. Luckily, United were able to get back and Boston were unable to find anyone inside the box as the ball was put out for a corner. The ball was swung in and Boston received a second corner, from which Simon Garner cleared the ball off his own line for a third successive corner as Boston began to apply pressure.
On 67 minutes, Adam Carden was replaced by Tristram Whitman on loan from Eastwood Town and Tommy Turner and Simon Carden were replaced by Carlos Roca and Neil Chappel ten minutes later, leaving Wilson and Whitman to head up the FC attack.
In what was an impressive game for the right back, Warrender unleashed a screaming shot from 20 yards out that went just over the Boston bar. Jerome Wright then picked up the ball on the edge of the area and attempted to go for goal, however just failing to lob Martyn Margarson who caught the ball.
The FC United supporters were left jubilant when Kyle Wilson scored a fantastic goal in the 85th minute. Wilson picked up an excellent ball from Warrender and made a strong run down to the right of the Boston area before slotting a great tight-angled shot under Margarson in the Boston goal.
FC United will surely be more than satisfied with taking home all three points in front of 1625 in freezing conditions in Boston. The Reds will now face Prescot Cables at Gigg Lane next Saturday.
