Statement on the proposed European Super League

FC United is disappointed to hear about the renewed proposal for a European Super League (ESL) – and we’re once again calling for better supporter representation across the game we all love.

Football fans around the UK strongly voiced their opposition to the formation of an ESL in April 2021. To try to push through the ESL again shows a blatant disregard for their views and the strength of their feelings.

Supporter engagement
We believe that football as a whole should be owned and led by ordinary fans, who have been the lifeblood of the game for more than a century. We strongly advocate clubs being fully owned by their supporters. As an absolute minimum, we believe there should be better supporter engagement across football.

All major ideas and issues that directly impact supporters should only be decided with extensive consultation with and approval by ordinary match-going fans. We urge fans across the UK to make their collective feelings known by joining their independent supporters’ association and working with the Football Supporters’ Association to fight for better representation.

Respect the fans
Over the last few decades, numerous football clubs across the UK and Europe have become playthings of rich benefactors with dubious morals and ethics. The renewed ESL proposal once again demonstrates that these people, now represented by A22 Sports Management, do not value or respect the fans.

While UEFA and FIFA are far from perfect, we believe they provide a much better framework for football than the unelected A22 Sports Management, whose sole purpose is to extract as much money from football fans around the world to make a few extremely rich individuals even richer. If they had any interest in supporters’ views whatsoever, A22 would have involved them throughout the proposal.

Speak out
While a potential ESL may not affect FC United directly, we will continue to speak out on issues that are important to football fans whilst offering affordable football for everyone at our fan-funded Broadhurst Park ground.

We remain committed to our one-member, one-vote ethos and our mission of working with and supporting the communities of Moston, north Manchester and beyond. We welcome any supporters who share our vision and want to be involved in our journey to see football, fans and the community united.

Become a member today and get yourself to our football ground this Saturday 23 December. Our game against Stafford Rangers kicks-off at the supporter-friendly and traditional time of three o’clock. It's pay on the gate, just as football should be, with entry prices decided by our members - £13 for adults, £9 concessions, £3 for under-18s and free for children under the age of five.
