Match Preview: Workington AFC (H) - Pitching In Northern Premier League

Match preview ahead of tomorrow's Pitching In Northern Premier League game between FC United and Workington AFC at Broadhurst Park (KO: 3pm)

League football returns to Broadhurst Park for the first time in over a month as we look to carry on the momentum from last weekend’s victory with the visit of Workington.

Team News

  • Defender Charlie Oliver will be out of action until at least the new year with an injury.

  • Guy Hall and Luca Navarro both trained in midweek; it is hoped the pair will both play a part in tomorrow’s game.

FC United boss, Mark Beesley on Leek win: “It was a really important three points at Leek last week. I was pleased with the way we fought it out to get the win.

“Having watched the game back, some of the chances we had were probably better than they looked on first viewing. It’s important that we’re more ruthless and put some of those away.”

Our Opponents – Workington AFC, The Reds

Workington are currently four points above FC in 15th having won five, drawn three and lost eight of their 16 league games so far. The visitors have the worst away record in the division, with one win and seven defeats from eight games on the road.

Workington make the trip to Moston off the back of a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Whitehaven in the Cumberland Senior Cup, a competition in which the club were victorious last campaign. Leading the line for Mark Fell’s side is former Barrow and Carlisle striker Steven Rigg, who has 10 goals to his name in all competitions.

Previous Meetings

Last season’s meetings between FC and Workington saw the Cumbrians take the points on both occasions, with the Reds’ last trip to Broadhurst Park ending 3-1 to the away side. United have got the better of Workington on home turf in the past; the first ever meeting between the two sides saw Lewis Lacy score the winner in a 1-0 victory for FC at the Tameside Stadium in 2015.

Beesley on Workington: “It will be another tough game. Mark Fell is a really good manager and he knows how to organise a team at this level. They’ve had some injury issues themselves, and they rested quite a few for their County Cup match in midweek, so they should be relatively fresh for the game.

“It’s over a month since we last played here at Broadhurst Park, so it’s good to be back. I hope we get a great atmosphere to spur the lads on as we look to build on last week.”
