FC United manager Karl Marginson believes that consistency and hard work to maintain the current level of performance will be key during the end of season run in.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit to Alfreton Town, Margy was optimistic following on from a solid team performance losing 2-1 to second placed AFC Fylde last Saturday before beating league leaders Solihull Moors by the same scoreline away on Tuesday evening.
He said: “I think the past few games have shown the hard work ethic that we’ve driven into the team and that’s something we’ve got to take into every game from here on.
“Tuesday’s game had a real feel of the games towards the back end of last season, with a good solid performance and getting the result.???
And, despite the bumps in the road, Margy believes this season has been one of the most important in FC United’s 11 year history. He said: “Even though there’s not a trophy at the end of it this year, I’d say that getting these results is more important as it allows us to stay in the league and learn for next season.???
There are no fresh injury worries ahead of Saturday’s game, with George Thomson and Harry Winter missing training on Thursday night with slight knocks as more of a precautionary measure than anything else.
Alfreton came away from Broadhurst Park with a 3-1 victory a little over a month ago and that is something which Margy insists he and the players will be looking to put right. He added: “They came to our place and took three points, so that’s all the motivation we need to do the same to them. We feel we’re playing well and the result on Tuesday has given us a real boost, so there’s no reason why we can’t do it.???
That meeting in February is the only meeting between the two clubs. Alfreton cancelled out Sam Madeley’s first half goal with three second half strikes to comfortably win the game.
The Derbyshire club are currently without a win in their last three games, but have drawn their last two games which were both away to Worcester City (1-1) and Hednesford Town (3-3). They have lost only once at home during the calendar year from five games, which was their last home game when they went down 3-2 to AFC Telford.
FC United currently sit 14th in the table, seven points behind Saturday’s hosts, who are three places above them and - for the pessimistic ones among us - six points above the relegation places with eight games remaining.
