Next season South Shields FC will play in the Northern Premier League Division One North (Step 4) having been crowned Champions of the Northern League last season, losing just two league matches all season. They also won the Northern League Cup and Durham Challenge Cup last season.

On Sunday 21st May South Shields won the FA Vase beating Cleethorpes 4-0 at Wembley.

In 2013 South Shields celebrated its 125th anniversary, but also found itself homeless after the lease on Filtrona Park, where it had played since 1992, expired. With no alternatives in the local area, the club was forced to temporarily move to Peterlee, 20 miles away. As a result, crowds dropped to an average of about 50 and the club faced a real battle to survive.

A seven-strong committee kept the club alive during an extremely difficult two-year spell in Peterlee, before local businessman Geoff Thompson came on board and offered to help. He ended up doing much more than that, buying Filtrona Park (which he renamed Mariners Park) and moving the club back there, becoming chairman in the process. Since then the Mariners have won back-to-back promotions and are a club very much on the rise.

Those small attendances are now a thing of the past, with two crowds of more than 3,000 recorded at Mariners Park last season, and an average of more than 1,250.

The joint managers are Lee Picton and Graham Fenton, who led the team on a remarkable run of 32 consecutive victories earlier this season. Former Sunderland and Middlesbrough star Julio Arca leads the way in midfield.
