FCUMW Crowned NWWRFL Premier Division Champions

FC United Women are NWWRFL Premier Division Champions

Last night FC United Women travelled to Tranmere Rovers needing just a point to be crowned North West Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division champions.

FC started the game quickly opening the scoring in the third minute as Flanagan picked the ball up and drove through the middle of the pitch beating several Tranmere players before squaring the ball unselfishly to Dixon who was able to open the scoring with a quality finish.

FC continued to put pressure on the Tranmere back line but were unable to add to the lead as several red shirts saw their efforts go wide, or over the bar. Tranmere made us pay for our lack of clinical finishing after 27 minutes when a defensive mix up allowed them to level the game. FC continued to carve out chances for the remainder of the second half with Flanagan, Dixon, and Battle all going close but none were able to find the back of the net and half came to a close with the scores level at 1-1.

The second half started with FC again on top when Flanagan was fouled on the edge of the box, with both Dixon and Chambers stood over the free kick it was Dixon who stepped up and arrowed the ball into the top corner and restored our lead. The second half continued much in the same way as the first half with FC carving out chance after chance but nobody was able to find that killer instinct as Dixon, Chambers, Flanagan and Hayes all saw efforts go agonisingly wide of the goal.

With the clock ticking down FC won a corner deep into second half stoppage time, and Emily Marsh was able to rise above the defence and head the ball towards goal which was cleared only as far as Smith who was able to find the back of the net in the games dying moments. The final whistle blew shortly after and the celebrations were able to begin as Kirsty Chambers and James Mulvihill lifted the trophy together with the team.

FCUMW’s league campaign will come to a close on Sunday afternoon as we face Fleetwood Town Wrens at Broadhurst Park, kick off is at 3pm.
