FC United travel to Trafford for final pre-season friendly

With just four days until the league season kicks off at Chorley, FC United make the short journey to Shawe View to face Trafford FC for the final warm up game on Tuesday evening.

Before Saturday’s home defeat to Rochdale the Reds had hit fine form with three consecutive victories against Nelson (4-1), Hereford (1-0) and Mossley (4-0), with the Mossley performance being a particular highlight with the on-field performance of a couple of new faces.

With the first league game only days away the game could be an opportunity for whoever plays to stake a claim for a starting place for any of the first three league games which take place less than a week apart.

The two teams have met eleven times with seven meetings coming in competitive competitions. Of those seven competitions the Reds have amazing never lost to Trafford (4 wins and 3 draws), but in friendly games it’s the hosts who hold the better record winning three of the four pre-season meetings including a 2-0 victory the last time we met in pre-season.

The last meeting between the two came on New Year’s Day during the 2014/2015 title winning season with FC United winning the game at the Tameside Stadium 3-0 thanks to goals from Craig Lindfield, Matthew Walwyn and Tom Greaves.

The familiarity is not just with the opponents on Tuesday evening but also with their playing staff, as the Trafford squad includes former FC players in the form of Kyle Jacobs, Lee Neville, Nicky Platt and Shelton Payne as well as Aaron Burns who scored eight goals in fourteen games for the club during a brief spell in the 2007/2008 season.

Trafford have had a good run so far in the pre-season with 1-1 draws against our fellow National League North sides Altrincham and Chorley as well as a 7-0 win at Prestwich Heys last week.

The Evo-Stick League doesn’t get underway until next Saturday when Trafford play hosts to Burscough, the Lillywhites finished 15 points behind their first league opponents last season but had a strong season with an 8th placed finish and 65 points.

Tuesday’s game is a 7.45pm kick off with match arrangements detailed below. So get yourself to that football ground.
