FC United sign defender Matty Thomson ahead of 2025/26 season

FC United of Manchester are pleased to announce the signing of right-back Matty Thomson for the 2025/26 season. 

The 25-year-old Wirral-based defender joins from Southport and brings with him solid experience from the National League North and Northern Premier League. 

Prior to his time at Southport, Matty enjoyed spells at Bamber Bridge and Chester, earning a reputation as a consistent and reliable performer. 

Known for his pace, tenacity and composure on the ball, Matty adds further strength to the Reds’ back line and fits the profile of the energetic, committed players at the heart of manager Mark Beesley’s plans.

Beesley said: “Matty is a great addition for us. He’s defensively solid, gets forward well, and has the kind of attitude we want in the dressing room. We’re really pleased to bring him in.”

Thomson added: “As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew this was the right move. FC United’s a massive club at this level and I can’t wait to get going, meet the fans and play my part in what we’re trying to build here.”
