FC United host Flixton on Non-League Day 2026

On Saturday 28 March – Non-League Day 2026 – we’re delighted to host newly reborn Flixton FC and welcome back our former players Alex Mortimer and Rhodri Giggs as Flixton's managers.

21 years ago, Flixton gave us one of our first ever games - a pre-season friendly at Valley Road in August in 2005. We’re honoured to return the favour now, as Flixton build up towards their first season of competitive football since 2012

On Tuesday 2nd August 2005, Steve Torpey, now Academy Director at Manchester United, sealed his place in history by scoring our first-ever goal in a 5-2 win over Flixton. Torpey scored again from the penalty spot and further goals were added by Steve Spencer, Adie Orr and Greg Randles as the Reds claimed our first-ever victory!

Around 1,600 supporters were in attendance with no idea what the next two decades had in store, but they all agreed on one thing - Love United, Hate Glazer!

Flixton manager Alex Mortimer made 44 appearances for FC United during 2006 and 2007, and his assistant manager, Rhodri Giggs, scored 18 goals in 81 appearances during two spells for the club.

Rhodri said:
"Alex and I are really looking forward to coming back to FC United. It’s a match all the lads are looking forward to, especially to see if they can match their ability with a real good outfit like FC. Our chairman is even coming back to the UK early for the match!

"I always enjoy going back to Broadhurst Park because I have some fond memories there. They are the best fans in the world for me, so it’ll be nice to catch up with people at the club. I'm sure we'll bring plenty of our fans too for what should be a great match."
