CYCM preview: Morpeth Town

Read the full preview of the first CYCM of 2025.

After 15 high quality events in 2024, here we go into 2025 with a potential further nine (we’re taking nothing for granted considering how many Saturday games we lost last year) to come. We’ll be giving you more detail of who we have pencilled in soon, but first up this year we have another band that has taken the transpennine route from Sheffield to Broadhurst Park, Dearthworms. Self-described by guitarist Andy Ball as “proudly a hobby band. It’s a chance for us to sit in pubs, play gigs, berate people, and get our weird sad thoughts out of our heads and into music”. Saturday presents them with an opportunity to add play under the stand at a football ground in a space that’s a unique ‘nightclub in the afternoon’.

Given the tracks we’ve heard from debut LP, ‘Sapsucker’, we’re expecting them to be loud, proud and wonky. Shake off those back to work blues and come along to see them. They’ve promised to bring some merch with them, but they also expect to forget their card-reader so try to bring some folding money.

Our opening spoken word act has not yet been confirmed, but we do have two fantastic irons (Sheffield reference there) in the fire, so keep your eyes on the usual places for news.

Drinks and victuals news: We have the usual array of pies (Tater Ash and Cheese) from Westwell’s Pie Emporium (Rose’s kitchen) in Droylsden, along with Colwyn Bay-sourced mushy peas. For once we do have advance notice of the muffins, which are appropriately post-Xmas left-over Turkey and Stuffing. Mmm… meat. As if we would let down our vegetarian muffinistas like that. The muffins for this game are appropriately post-Xmas Cranberry Sauce.

Behind the bar we have Track Brewing Co’s Sonoma IPA on cask, along with Holt’s Red Rebel. There will also be some cans of Cloudwater’s Fuzzy and Big Drop’s Poolside (0%) in the fridges. Ask for them by name.

So, we tear down the Xmas decorations at 12.59, throw the doors wide at 13.00. The bar will be open. Pies should be with us around 13.30. They sold out by 14.00 last time. Muffin-arrival time depends upon how well Andy Burnham’s Bee Network(tm) is running. Baz will provide valuable sweary context for the day at 13.45. The much-vaunted TBC will be bringing us fresh, relevant poetry or comedy or both at 13.50. Dearthwormsmania will hit Moston round about 14.15. Then it’s all outside for football at 3pm on a Saturday.

See you there.
