Consistency the key for Jacobs ahead of Whitby clash
Following a successful 4-2 curtain-raiser at Grantham on Saturday, FC United captain Kyle Jacobs is looking forward to welcoming Whitby to Gigg Lane for Tuesday night’s first home match of the season.
After the disappointment of losing in the play-off final for the second year running in May, FC United skipper Jacobs is a man hungry for success. The Moston-born defender feels the team has all the attributes this season to not need the play-offs and set up a potentially dream first season at our new home in the Conference North.
Looking forward to the season ahead, Jacobs is confident in the team’s ability to do well, saying: “All the lads are looking forward to the season and hopefully winning it this season, instead of having to go through the play-offs again.???
And the key to this success? Simply, consistency. United have had barren spells during the past two seasons, which if losses were turned into draws and draws into victories, then things could have been completely different come the end of the season.
“I think we need to keep consistent throughout the whole season,??? concedes Jacobs, adding: “What we have to do is make sure when we’re dominating that we win, but also know that sometimes you just have to dig in and get the result. Sometimes in football you can’t always play the football that you want to and sometimes you have to do the ugly things first.???
The big factor this season for Jacobs is the amount of players that have signed on from last season, meaning there’s minimal levels of transition of players into the team, plus the influence of some new (sometimes old) faces gives the squad a massive boost.
“Not having to gel together like we did last year will make us better in the opening weeks. We know each other’s game well and definitely function as a team now,??? explains Jacobs.
“I think the new faces will only strengthen the squad and everybody that has come in is a great player and definitely brings something extra to the team, which is exactly what we needed.???
Such optimism in the dressing rooms coupled with eternal optimism of the United faithful should mean that the Red Army will be out in full force this season, looking for a good start to what will hopefully be a successful season.
Kyle Jacobs was talking to Craig Phillips.
