Busy pre-season builds with three games in six days

As the Reds return from a great experience in Switzerland the pre-season campaign picks up momentum with three games in just six days.

FC travel to Nelson on Thursday evening, before welcoming Hereford FC to Broadhurst Park on Saturday and then quickly moving onto our old friends at Mossley the following Tuesday.

With no wins in the first three games of pre-season it’s not been the start that Margy’s men would have been looking for results wise, but the performances have been good despite the results and if we keep up those levels of performance then surely the results will come by the time the games start counting on August 6.

One man who’s having a fine run of form at the moment is Tom Greaves, who has scored four goals in the three games so far and with Greaves just 16 competitive goals away from a club record a good season may see him make a real attack on Rory Patterson’s record.

First up for the Reds is a short trip up to Victoria Park to take on North West Counties Premier League side Nelson FC.

In terms of finding some form the past meetings between the two teams would suggest that FC may get their first win of the 2016/2017 campaign having won four of the five meetings to date, the last meeting was an emphatic 8-0 win to FC United on this very ground back in 2007, with a certain Jerome Wright getting his name on the scoresheet that day.

Nelson come into this season after a 16th place finish last year, which was nine points and four places clear of Alsager Town in the relegation places.

The Admirals (what else are you going to nickname a team called Nelson?) have played three games so far during this pre-season losing 2-0 against Hyde United, drawing 1-1 with our fellow National League North side Bradford Park Avenue and at weekend they went down 3-2 to a Ramsbottom United side featuring former FC United captain Dean Stott.
