Big Hearts, Big Football: Disability‑Friendly Tournament Shines at FC United of Manchester

Disability Friendly Football Tournament at FC United of Manchester

The power of football was on full display on Friday 8 May, as smiles, teamwork and passion lit up the pitch at FC United of Manchester during a brilliant Disability Friendly Football Tournament that celebrated inclusion, confidence and community.

For the past three years, FC United of Manchester has proudly worked in partnership with the MCC STEPS Programme, supporting learners with learning needs and disabilities to thrive in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Using football as a powerful tool for engagement, confidence-building and connection, the partnership continues to prove that the beautiful game really is for everyone.

This special “play on the pitch” event brought together STEPS students alongside Manchester College Openshaw skills groups, giving participants the unforgettable experience of playing on the famous FC United turf. From the moment they stepped onto the pitch, the excitement was clear – this was more than just a match day, it was a celebration.

Adding to the sense of pride and belonging, STEPS students took to the field wearing their official FC United kits, funded by BOOST. The kits weren’t just clothing – they represented identity, confidence and a strong connection to the club. Pulling on the shirt created an instant feeling of being part of something bigger, and the players wore them with enormous pride.

The football on show was fantastic – full of effort, teamwork and determination – but what truly stole the show were the smiles, laughter and shared moments across the day. Goals were celebrated just as loudly as great passes, tackles and moments of encouragement between teammates. It was football at its purest and most joyful.

Behind the scenes, a huge amount of care and dedication went into making the day a success. Staff from FC United, MCC STEPS and The Manchester College worked together seamlessly to create a safe, supportive and uplifting experience for every participant.

A huge thank you to all the staff, partners and supporters who helped make the day so memorable. Most of all, thank you to the players themselves, who reminded everyone why inclusive sport matters and why football truly has the power to bring people together.

Judging by the laughter and beaming faces at full time, there’s no doubt about it – this was a day to remember, and one we hope every participant will carry with them for a long time to come.
