FC United crash out of Manchester Premier Cup at Wythenshawe Town

FC United exited the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup at the quarter final stage as they lost 3-1 at Wythenshawe Town on Tuesday night with Benito Lowe scoring a wonder strike from 50 yards out.

The Reds, playing in their green and yellow away strip, fell behind after 15 minutes to Lowe’s first goal but got back on level terms in first half stoppage time through Guy Hall.

However, two goals in five minutes midway through the second half – from Matthew Bryan and Lowe’s sensational second – were enough to see Town through to the semi-finals.

FC United started the game brightly, spreading the play well and utilising the space. However, they were knocked quickly out of their rhythm as the home side cut in from the wing in a lovely move and Lowe converted with aplomb to make it 1-0.

FC continued to threaten the Wythenshawe goal, but stray passes and heavy first touches prevented them from making anything count. The game became something of a scrappy affair as the first half wore on, with both sides contesting free-kicks and riding challenges.

The Reds drew level on the stroke of half time, as a smart ball was whipped across the face of goal where it was tucked away by Hall for 1-1.

The visitors emerged from the break looking refreshed, and for the first 10 minutes dominated proceedings.

However, the hosts went ahead again on the hour mark. A free-kick was curled in and Bryan rose above everyone else to head past Dan Lavercombe to make it 2-1.

The atmosphere was ratcheted up another notch by the home support behind the FC goal, and they were in raptures once again just four minutes later.

Lavercombe was caught off his line by the home side, as Lowe scored his second. His excellent strike from the halfway line looped into the back of the net, securing a place in the semi-final for the home side.

After the match, FC United manager Neil Reynolds said: “I’m obviously really disappointed with the result tonight. We were second best, and it’s clear which team wanted it more.

“There are a few players in there that have had a few too many lives and tonight should be a wake-up call. We’re looking to sign some re-enforcements now, because that side can’t win against South Shields and then come to Wythenshawe and lose like that.”

Next up, FC United are back in league action with a trip to Stafford Rangers on Saturday 26th November.
