Match Report
Two goals from Kyle Wilson and one from captain David Chadwick were enough to see FC United past Worksop Town and onto the third qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy.

The Tigers have been struggling this season and on Saturday FC United looked head and shoulders above the home team as they almost controlled the game from the first whistle to the last kick of the ball.

From the moment the game kicked off and the Untied players began to knock the ball around it wouldn’t have been unfair to assume it was more a case of when and not if they would breach the home defence.

That opening goal came when Jerome Wright broke down the left and crossed to his fellow winger Adam Carden, who made space for himself in the box before being brought down just as he was about to strike at goal.

Up stepped Wilson who drilled the ball into the bottom left hand corner and put United 1-0 up in the opening 15 minutes.

The Reds seemed to switch off for large portions of the first half and became a little complacent for much of the opening 45.

They almost doubled the lead when Carlos Roca’s shot rebounded off Worksop ‘keeper; Steve Hernandez’s legs which then bounced off Roca and just wide of the post.

United had another good chance when Simon Carden’s shot was well saved and then Adam Carden was denied form close range on the brink of half time.

United sensed they had their opponents on the ropes and that a second goal would all but kill them off and came out looking for the second straight from the interval.

The travelling fans didn’t have to wait long after some good possession and passing Wilson found Wright on the left whose audacious lob attempt was just cleared off the line before Chadwick came charging in to head his first goal of the season and put United two goals up.

But like any good prizefighter would they kept coming seeking another good shot that would leave their opponent with absolutely no way back.

Chadwick went close again with another strong header and a string of half chances followed. Wilson went close from long range, as did Danny Warrender who again filled the midfield position putting in another strong performance.

The home team weren’t completely out of it and went close a few times themselves, including a good headed chance before half time. The one time they did get the ball past Sam Ashton, Liam Foster acrobatically cleared off the line, as if to say it would not be the Tigers’ day.

The win and progression were wrapped up when Wilson out-muscled the central defender, found himself one-on-one with Hernandez and coolly put the ball away, giving United the victory they deserved.

It wasn’t just about the victory, but the performance of the team as a whole was at the top level once more.

With the victory Untied put themselves in the third qualifying round of the competition for the first time in their brief but exciting history, and there was an eager sense of excitement as the fans made the journey back home.
