Match Report
FC United must pick themselves up after losing 3-2 to Whitby Town on Saturday afternoon at the Turnbull Ground.
Centre-back Adam Jones scored on his return to the club after nine months out of a red shirt with an Achilles injury and Tom Greaves netted his 20th goal of the season as the Reds twice drew level, once in each half.
But there wasn’t to be a happy ending to our trip to the North Yorkshire coast Graeme Armstrong got the winner for The Seasiders with six minutes to go, adding to his opening goal in the seventh minute and another from Steven Snaith two minutes into the second half.
The Reds started well, Astley Mulholland shooting wide and Greg Daniels seeing his turn and shot saved by Shane Bland. It was a surprise when The Seasiders took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game when a good move and static FC defence saw Armstrong played into the box and he kept his cool to slot past Dave Carnell.
On 16 minutes, Nelson Mota looked to have opened his FC account when he connected with a Lee Neville cross with an acrobatic overhead kick that went just past the post. On the half hour FC deservedly pulled level when a corner was flicked on by Greaves to Jones, who headed the ball into the goal with help from a defender.
As has happened often, FC were caught cold at the start of the second half when a free-kick from the left touch line was allowed to get to the far post. It was met by a Whitby attacker who put the ball into the six yard box. The FC United defence couldn’t defend the ball and in an attempt to clear, the ball was hit against Steven Snaith and dropped into the net.
The Reds were still seeing the majority of the possession but couldn’t make many clear cut chances or work the home keeper which is testament to the resolute home defence. However, just before the hour mark, Greaves was played in with a long ball over the top and finished well past Bland to bring the score back level.
Two minutes later, Jones almost picked up his second goal when he headed a corner just over. With just six minutes remaining Whitby won the game when a ball released Armstrong. He looked to have been well tackled by Dean Stott but the ball broke clear, Armstrong picked it up and ran into the box where he beat Carnell at his near post.
Overall it was one of those frustrating afternoons for FC where they dominated the game without creating many clear chances and were undone again by basic errors.

Man of the match - Greg Daniels. Just pips Nelson Mota for his all action performance where he was a constant threat to the home defence.
