Match Report
In the first of three cup semi-finals, FC United youth took the short journey to Newall Green to take on NJ Wythenshawe Juniors in the Manchester FA County Cup and emerged with a hard fought 4-2 victory.
Despite a bright start the reds were hit with a classic sucker punch in the third minute. A long throw was aimed at the near post and was turned in with the minimum of challenge by the defence. Their lead only lasted five minutes as Jonathan Poizer pounced whilst the ball bounced around the Wythenshawe penalty area.
For the next half hour it was all FC as the lads tried to add to the score, perhaps with a few too many long shots but always finding the Wythenshawe keeper in fine form. The goal did come in the 39th minute when Theo Kidd headed home from a Matthew Boland corner. This should have been the cue for FC to take control of the game but on the stroke of half time Wythenshawe equalised. A shot was well saved by Jonathan Beisty but not conclusively and the home side were first to react as the ball broke loose.
The second half was a test of strength as the reds chose to try and run through the Wythenshawe defence rather than let the ball do the work and as such the only players to emerge with any credit were the two goalkeepers who dealt with what little did break through the middle of the field.
The deadlock was broken in the 80th when Matthew Boland took a free kick from the left hand corner of the penalty area and found the top corner of the net. A fourth was added three minutes later when Boland set up substitute Matthew Hassall to drive into the bottom corner.
Wythenshawe worked hard throughout the game and would perhaps consider they were unlucky not to have got more for their effort but ultimately the reds won the day and ensured at least one cup final to crown their season.
