LIVERPOOL MARSHALLS FEDS RESERVES 0 FC UNITED of MANCHESTER WOMENS TEAM 4
After Wednesday’s 6-1 victory in Liverpool 18, United’s Women strayed into Liverpool 17 to face Liverpool Marshall Feds Reserves at the IM Marsh Sports Complex on Sunday and in a game hampered by strong winds, they maintained a perfect start to the season beating their hosts 4-0.
Despite the aforementioned wind whipping off the distant but clearly visible Welsh mountains, across the River Dee, Wirral Peninsula and over the Mersey the day was mild and bright and United, settled the better taking an early lead through a Shellby Wolstencroft free kick. Despite the best efforts of both sides no further goals were added in the first half but United notched three without reply in the second half courtesy of Kirsty Chambers, Chloe Wild & Mia Holden.
Prior to kick off a well observed silence was held in memory of Sylvia Gore MBE; a stalwart ambassador for the Women’s game and scorer of the first ever England goal in an official international who sadly passed away last Friday.
United kicked off forcing a couple of throws deep in the Liverpool half. The hosts defended well spurred on by the familiar ‘scary vocals’ of their keeper and FC’s Captain in season one, Amy Gillingham. As early as the second minute Gillingham was called into action as Wild burst down the right and centred superbly for Jade Parker to hit the target with the keeper holding well. Just minutes later Parker threaded a ball between two defenders and Wolstencroft, poised to strike was cynically tripped just outside the area leading to the game’s first caution from referee Ken Jones.
Wolstencroft, having earned the free kick, shouldered the responsibility and in the swirling wind wisely kept her curling effort low as it bypassed the wall and the despairing dive of Gillingham to open the scoring on six minutes.
On the quarter hour Chelsea Patient, playing out from the back found Parker whose pass into the stride of Chambers down the left resulted in the Captain firing past Gillingham but into the side netting.
As the score line remained 1-0 Marshall Feds grew into the game and Faye Cummins received a throw and half volleyed from 20 yards with Chloe Williams claiming well as United launched a counter down the right. Parker’s cross was skilfully punched off the head of Wolstencroft by Gillingham just beyond her far post as the striker looked certain to bag her second on the half hour.
Jade Moore broke behind FC’s defence and into the area almost latching onto a decent cross but Williams was quickly out to smother the danger and as half time beckoned good work from Chambers and Wild enabled Wolstencroft to test the reflexes of Gillingham with the former Red denying a second goal.
United looked to double their advantage at the start of the second half as Wild beat Gillingham but fired her shot just wide. The Feds didn’t sit back however and Williams was forced into a fine double save first from Kayleigh Davies then Moore on the follow up.
As on so many past occasions it was United’s Captain who steadied the ship and doubled the red’s lead with a strike of pure quality on the hour. After a nudge in the back of Wolstencroft the referee awarded a free kick 45 yards from goal in a central position just outside the centre circle. Up stepped Chambers and her unerring set piece arrowed over the back peddling Gillingham into the top corner of her goal.
United were in the ascendancy and good work by Olivia Gannon and Chambers saw the latter’s shot well parried by Gillingham only for Wild to collect the loose ball on the left edge of the area curling her effort back over the keeper and in at the far post from a tight angle.
Since her introduction to the game, Gannon gave the host’s defence not a moment’s peace and on 71 minutes she was bearing down on goal as Gillingham and a covering defender collided with the number 12; the three players going down in a tangled heap. Holden latched onto the loose ball coolly chipping over the melee and into an empty net from 25 yards. Gannon herself fired goalwards but only found the side netting and as the game entered its final throes Lauren Sweeney almost fashioned a goal for Liverpool latching onto a free kick deep inside United’s area but guiding her effort over Williams’ bar.
The day after the Men’s team begin their FA Cup campaign away at Ossett Town; United’s Women make their debut in the Women’s FA Cup next Sunday as they welcome Bolton Wanderers to Broadhurst Park. Get yourself to our football ground and cheer the girls into the next round.
