Match Report
Margy travelled on the six official coaches that left Chorlton Street at 11:00 for Harrison Park, home of Leek Town, the Old Boy’s landlords. The reason for the early departure was to allow for the delays caused by the countless number of speed cameras on the A523 which make owning a Ferrari in these parts a complete waste of time – steer clear Rio.

In difficult circumstances many of the Reds on these charabancs would have been leaving to join Ferguson’s red and white army instead of Marginson’s. Indeed one famous old Beswick Red on coach three he was on the way to Goodison Park. A stupid mistake maybe – but not as stupid as it sounds considering that these buses were packed with faces regularly seen over the years on Manchester United away trips. He seemed to have no real beef when his true destination was revealed.

FC United, wearing their ‘Vasco Da Gama’ style away lit for the first time, got off to a lively start with Joz Mitten coming close, but it was the home side that took the lead through Colin Fletcher (14). The fine hospitality of the people of Leek then stretched to the Old Boy’s defence when six minutes later a poor clearance found Steven Spencer who thanked them as he gratefully took his equalizer. Leek were still looking dangerous on their rare attacks but United went 2-1 up when Steve Torpey shot was spilled by the keeper and Mitten was there to pounce (30).

His celebration earned him a booking. Minutes later Joz had the ball in the back of the net again but this time he was not celebrating. Not that he was scared of the ref but because it was ruled out for offside. Karl Marginson’s warning that this league would be no easy ride looked to be correct when a long range shot from Jake Johnson put Leek level twelve minutes before the break. The second half looked set to be less energetic affair until just past the hour when the now customary handbags skirmish broke out. From the resulting Torpey free kick Rob Nugent had a header saved and the ball was scrambled away but from then on United moved up a gear and started to pile on the pressure. With 20 minutes left substitute Darren Lyons’ header brought a decent save from James ‘Shaggy’ Hall. The Leek keeper managed to stop Mitten’s header from the corner that followed but the ball came out to Spencer who hit his second of the afternoon (72).

Torpey sealed the game with a cracking free kick which brought a flash of the legendry thong (80) and if the FC board have got any business sense they will be selling replicas in the club shop ASAP.

Normally a fourth goal would have been the signal for the fan’s party to begin but at this club it is in full-swing from the first whistle. Despite being soaked to the skin the travelling Reds had sung their hearts out all afternoon with ‘Under the Boardwalk’ getting a regular airing although the poignant ‘I don’t care about Rio’ was the tune of the day.

Adie Orr put the cherry on Torpey’s cake after being put through by the thongster, with his shot taking a slight deflection before beating Hall in the last minute. The Reds should come across tougher opposition in the games to come and as Margy says, there will be no room for complacency.
