HAT-TRICKS FOR KIRSTY AND CORIE AS REDS’ WOMEN RACK UP A BAKER’S DOZEN IN THE FA CUP

FC United Women were in rampant form for the club’s first competitive fixture of the 2020/21 season to progress through to the Preliminary Round of the FA Women’s Cup with a 13-0 win over West Kirby Ladies last Sunday.

The pattern was set in the opening minutes as a Smith broke down the right and put over a cross from which both Richardson and Mather saw shots blocked by the keeper.

However the second of these resulted in a corner from which Cara Fields managed to get a glancing touch sending the ball goalwards to open the scoring. Fields was the one receiving the plaudits however video evidence later suggested that Beth Hayes got a touch with her thigh and might also have a claim on the goal.

What wasn’t in doubt however was the fact that United were already a goal to the good, which couldn’t have helped the confidence of the visitors who’d been beaten 6-1 at Broadhurst in an Argyle Cup tie in February.

However they showed enough grit and stubbornness to hold the Reds at bay for a good half hour during which Chambers hit the crossbar with a spectacular shot on the run, Richardson also worked herself a shooting angle before firing wide across goal and Smith hit a shot on the turn that West Kirby keeper Seager positioned herself well to save.

The second goal came on 33 minutes and featured a good run down the left from Chambers resulting in a hard, low cross that the defenders daren’t touch but which found Mather in space to stab the ball into the net from just beyond the far post. The floodgates were now open and three more were added before the break to put the result beyond reasonable doubt. Mather notched her second with a shot that looped over the keeper from around 25 yards out. Chambers then found herself in space on the right and shouted for the ball, which Fields duly delivered with a sweeping long pass. The skipper then jinked in along the by-line cutting back into the area to finish off with a low left foot shot. Smith then benefitted from a crafty flick by Richardson to score from the left side of the area making it 5-0 at the break.

Manager Kamran Hussain made changes at half time, sending on fresh legs of Cunliffe and Wright as the Reds continued to run the visitors ragged. Three more goals followed in the first seven minutes of the second half.

First of all, Mather returned a favour by providing Chambers with a close range scoring chance from a right wing cross, which the skipper despatched for her second of the afternoon. Cunliffe made it seven with a shot from just inside the area before Chambers completed her hat-trick with a shot from distance.

Chelsea Patient came up to power in a header from a corner to make it 9-0 with a typical central defender’s type of goal. Then, after Cunliffe had made it double figures with a tap in set up by Chambers, Patient turned striker with a well-placed shot from a ball over the defence to make it 11-0.

Having earlier missed a chance to notch a hat-trick goal with a shot across goal, Mather finally completed her personal treble, tucking away a ball played across goal by Chambers. The scoring was completed by Abbie Wright who marked her competitive debut for the Reds by firing in from a corner via a deflection off a defender.

Mention should also be made of the performance of Natalie Richardson who, although not enjoying much luck with her own scoring efforts, more than played her part in the team’s performance. In the dying minutes of the game, Richardson came close to breaking her duck in spectacular style with a touch of keepie-up to get the ball under control before lashing a dipping shot just wide across goal.

This result earns FC United another home tie against Ashton Town scheduled for Sunday 20th September, kick off 2pm. In the meantime though, the team are on the road for a friendly away to York City Ladies on Sunday 13th September 2020.
