FC United sunk 3-0 at home by Marine
A second half capitulation saw FC United lose 3-0 for the second time in four days as promotion chasing Marine proved too strong for the Reds at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night.
After a goalless first half, Marine showed no mercy in a 20-minute spell which produced three goals. To rub salt in the wounds, former Reds favourite Finlay Sinclair-Smith once again tormented his old team by scoring a quickfire brace.
Neil Reynolds’ side controlled the opening 15 minutes of the game. However, the visitors started to assert their dominance by the end of the first half. FC United had goalkeeper Pat Boyes to thanks for keeping them in the game with several good saves before the break.
The second half started the same manner as the first ended with Marine dominating the game. Marine’s first goal coming in the 52nd minute. The FC defence failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to the feet of Owen Robinson in the penalty area, who was one-on-one with the FC Keeper, and able to slip the ball past Boyes giving the Lilywhites the lead in front of their visiting fans.
Sinclar-Smith’s first goal came in the 70th minute as he picked the ball up on the left, cut inside to the edge of the FC penalty area and curled the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, past the despairing Boyes outstretched hand for 2-0.
Two minutes later, a swift Marine counterattack saw Sinclar-Smith head the ball into the FC goal giving Marine an unassailable 3-0 lead.
With time running out, FC towards pressed in search of a consolation and during injury time Trevon Bryan forced an excellent save from the Marine keeper who quickly got down to his left and pushed the ball away.
FC were able to recycle the ball and a low cross from the right found Jordan Buckley unmarked in the six-yard box, but Buckley was only able to direct his shot straight at the Marine keeper.
The match was also the second game for Lewis Gilboy, who’s brief FC campaign has consisted of two 3-0 losses. After starting the match away at Matlock last weekend, the winger was subbed on for captain Charlie Ennis in the 80th minute on Tuesday.
Gilboy played in that central midfield position for the final 10 minutes, following a booking for Ennis five minutes earlier for an aggressive challenge.
FC currently find themselves 16th in the league table, 13 points above the relegation zone. Next up, we host Gainsborough Trinity, who are currently sitting in 17th in the league table, only a single point behind the Reds. FC desperately need to get back to winning ways on Saturday, after two difficult games against Matlock and Marine.
Thank you for the support at home and away recently and see you at Broadhurst Park this weekend.
