Ten man FC United score last gasp winner against Guiseley
Matt Van Wyk scored a 97th minute winner on his competitive debut as the 10 men of FC United pulled off a sensational smash and grab 1-0 victory against promotional rivals Guiseley at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night in front of 1,393 supporters.
United recovered from a straight red card for centre-back Andy Halls midway through the second half to snatch all three points at the death.
Former Fulwood Amateurs striker Van Wyk, who featured in several pre-season friendlies for the Reds in 2020 before deciding to concentrate on his Finance and Economics degree at Lancaster University, returned to the club and spectacularly picked up where he left off.
Midfielder Luke Griffiths provided a delightfully decisive cross for Van Wyk to head home at the back post, sending the FC United faithful into raptures and keeping the Reds within three points of the Pitching In Northern Premier League play-off places.
It was just the tonic for Neil Reynolds' side, who endured a frustrating 1-0 defeat at Matlock Town on Saturday afternoon. The loss came just a day after losing the league's top scorer and fan favourite, Regan Linney, who moved up two divisions with a transfer to Altrincham of the National League. Maybe Reynolds has unearthed another priceless gem in Van Wyk?
