Five star United hammer Bridge
Goals from Jerome Wright, two from Chris Baguley, Nicky Platt and Aaron Burns sealed a magnificent 5-0 victory as title contenders Bamber Bridge collapsed in the President’s Cup at the Inn2gether Stadium.
After enduring a 30-minute delay due to floodlight failure, the Reds were straight out of the blocks, obviously champing at the bit to put their Radcliffe Borough cup hoodoo behind them and they were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes.
Mr Consistency, Jerome Wright took just five minutes to break the deadlock when he stumbled on to a through ball after a good interchange from Chris Baguley and Peter Thomson. The pacey winger steadied himself after brushing past two defenders to coolly slot the ball home just inside the box.
Five minutes later, Wright turned provider for the younger of the Baguley brothers to get his first. Wright shone down the left wing all night and it was a decent lay off by Thomson that allowed him to race away before cutting the ball back for Baguley to tap in.
The former Oldham Athletic midfielder’s second came via another superb freekick after Burns had been man handled on the edge of the box. Baguley is fast cementing a name as a dead ball specialist and he perfectly curled another beauty over the wall and right into the top left corner.
Nicky Platt added a fourth and put the contest beyond any doubt before the interval after being played in down the right by Jamie Baguley, who looked very impressive on his first start for the club.
All that was left was for Burns to grab his fourth goal in four games with a diving header early in the second half after Chris Baguley’s rapid corner had taken a flick-on in a crowded penalty area to the back post.
