FC United lose 2-1 at home to Ashton United

FC United suffered a second Bank Holiday weekend defeat as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Ashton United at Broadhurst Park on Monday.

Two of the three goals in the match came from a FC player with the first of the Robins’ goals being an own goal when the shot deflected in off FC’s right back, Joe Ferguson as the FC defence failed to clear the ball from their penalty area in the seventh minute.

Despite the early set back FC soon equalised thanks to a quality finish from Jordan Preston who received the ball following a run along the right wing, controlled and turned with ease before burying his shot into the top left corner past the despairing dive of the Ashton keeper.

The winner was scored in the 31st minute by Ashton’s Dan Cowan was able to get his shot away towards the back post into the bottom left of the FC net.

There was also an unfortunate event in which the red’s captain Charlie Ennis took a knock in added time of the first half and was unable to continue in the game from it, so was therefore replaced by Hayden Lindley before the half time.

In the second half, Ashton were content to sit deep and soak up the FC pressure. In the second 45 minutes, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target.

In one of the more contentious moments of the second half, FC substitute Dontai Gabidon was shown a yellow card on the touchline, after he was adjudged to have interfered with the ball before it had crossed the line for an Ashton throw-in.

With seconds ticking away after normal time expired, Adam Le Fondre came within inches of finding an equaliser for FC, after his free-kick attempt was kept out by a stunning save by the outstretched glove of O’Keefe to his right hand top corner. A defining moment with time running out, as the effort would prove to be the closest FC came to finding a second equaliser.

Steve Cunningham’s side withstood a barrage of red shirts going forward in added time, holding out to maintain their 100% away record to start the Pitching In Northern Premier Division campaign.

Despite the loss, there was a promising display from the FC United defence with some excellent challenges and well-timed interceptions, especially from Ferguson, who created many great attacking opportunities from his fullback position.

There was also a strong performance from FC’s number 9, Le Fonde. However, despite having the majority of the attacking play in the second half, the Reds could not manage the equaliser the SMRE craved.

The result sees the Reds drop down to 18th in the league table with five points from six games.

What we can take away from the performance is that the Reds are looking strong in both attack and defence, but FC failed to capitalise on chances in front of Ashton’s goal, this will need to improve especially as next Saturday’s visitors to Broadhurst Park are NPL league leaders Hyde in an FC Cup game on Saturday 31st August.
