FC United of Manchester’s Academy ’A’ team completed their season 2017-2018 ECFA NW Men’s Invitation 2A league programme with a 2-3 home defeat against Coaching Connexions Manchester Men’s 2nds on the Broadhurst Park 3G on Wednesday afternoon.

Coaching Connexions Manchester Men’s 2nds opened the scoring on 28 minutes when a long range free-kick from the left from RONNY PEPE drifted into the home goal past the unsighted David Mullen.

On 39 minutes, the visitors went two goals up. AUSONIO JOSE cut inside the penalty area before blasting the ball high into the roof of the net, virtually unopposed.

Three minutes before half-time, the home side pulled one back. JAY BRENNAN was tripped just inside the eighteen yard box and the same player picked himself up before scoring from the resultant spot kick to make the half-time score 1-2,

On 55 minutes, the visitors restored their two goal advantage. Steve Adeniya conceded a rash penalty and RONNY PEPE made no mistake from the 12 yards mark.

The Young Reds tried their utmost to get back into the game, shots rebounding off the goal frame on more than one occasion, but it wasn’t until the 84th minute that they scored again. Sam O’Donnell saw his shot parried and XAVIER IWEGBU was on hand to force the ball home.

And the same player might have grabbed a dramatic 90th minute equaliser but for a fine save from the visiting ’keeper as Coaching Connexions Manchester Men’s 2nds held on for a deserved 3-2 win.

Xavier Iwegbu finished as leading goalscorer for the Young Reds with six goals from his eight appearances for the FC United of Manchester Academy ’A’ team.
