FCUMW Flashback Friday: West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC Women

FC United Women make the trip to Brookburn Road to face West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC Women in the semi-finals of this season’s Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup on Sunday (17 March). The Reds are attempting to win the trophy for the third successive season and will be hoping to beat Sunday’s opponents at the semi-final stage for the second year in a row. That was one of three meetings between the two sides in the 2017/18 campaign…

FCUMW 5-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC Women (Battle 3, 49, 64, 66 Sullivan 55) – Sunday 29 October 2017 – NWWRL Division One South

The first of three meetings between the teams came in late-Autumn at Broadhurst Park when United put a statement out in the league title race with a comfortable victory. Jess Battle’s strike inside three minutes put United in to an early lead but the Reds had to wait until the second half to double it. Battle was again on target once again, racing forward before firing past the goalkeeper. It was then Fran Sullivan’s turn to get on the scoresheet, volleying Kirsty Chambers’ corner on the run and with the help of a deflection put FC in to a three-goal lead. The result may have looked set in stone, but Battle wasn’t done just yet. United’s number nine scored twice in the space of three minutes to complete the scoring and round off a perfect afternoon for Luke Podmore’s side.

West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC Women 0-3 FCUMW (Battle 50 Loukes 62 Hatcliffe 71) – Sunday 14 January 2018 – NWWRL Division One South

The reverse fixture was a well-contested game with the two sides going in to the break level at Brookburn Road. The deadlock was eventually broken shortly after the interval, Beth Tattersall’s sliding cross was tipped in to the path of Jess Battle who showed good strength to get to the ball first and poke it home to open the scoring once again. United were in control from that point and doubled the lead just after the hour. Yvette Loukes linked up well with Battle and Rebecca Foster before driving forward and sliding home the second. Nicole Hatcliffe got United’s third after coming off the bench, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper to help confirm a huge three points for United in the context of the league title race.

FCUMW 3-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC Women (Battle 24 Flanagan 52 Carrington 89) – Sunday 18 February 2018 – Manchester FA Women’s Cup semi-final

Just over a month after the latest league meeting, the two teams met for part three at Broadhurst Park, with a place in the final at stake at the visitors’ ground. United went in to a first-half lead through who else but Jess Battle – the striker made it three openers from three against WDC after her deflected strike found the back of the net. Having come on for her FCUMW debut just minutes earlier, forward Chelsea Flanagan doubled the lead, finishing off a superb FC counter-attack that begun with Fran Davies clearing a visiting corner. The tie was put to bed a minute before normal time as Abbie Carrington headed home Fran Sullivan’s corner to continue United’s defence of the trophy by progressing to the final. Luke Podmore & co will be hoping for a similar outcome in the latest episode of this fixture, on Sunday.
