FC United travel to Southport - match preview

The Reds travel to Southport on Saturday in another big game in the fight against relegation as we look to keep the momentum going from last weekend’s late draw against Guiseley.

A win for FC United could see us narrow the gap from us and safety to five points and potentially go above Ashton United in the process.

Last weekend, we can only take positives from what as an all seemingly impossible situation to comeback from. Trailing 3-1 down with 15 minutes of normal regulation time to go, all hope seemed like it was lost but a fantastic comeback from the Reds spearheaded by top scorer Kurt Willoughby and Tom Peers got us an important point in the circumstances.

We must use that fighting spirit going forward especially with the season nearing its end. With that point at home to Guiseley, that was only our eighth point we have tallied at home for this season, however the fightback can only give us a slight bit of confidence heading into the game against Southport.

Our away record as well has been considerably better in the league, than our home form, where we have managed to pick up key and important wins against the likes of Bradford Park Avenue and Kidderminster Harriers. Away from home this season we have picked up 17 points, however our last away win was on the 12th January against aforementioned Bradford PA.

In our last five games, we have only picked up one point having drawn the previous game and losing the previous four.

As for our opponents Southport FC, they are currently 13th in the league having played 30 games in the league so far this season and have picked up 39 points this season. The Port are currently seven points off the play-off places in the Vanarama National League North, having finished 15th last season.

The home side come into this game on the back of a spirited 3-2 defeat against second place Stockport County, having led the game 2-1 at halftime. The defeat against Stockport was their eleventh in the league this season.

Southport are coming into this game on slightly better form than us, having picked up four points from their last 15 available in the league, winning once, drawing once and losing three times. Their last win came against league leaders Chorley in a 5-3 win on the 9th February.

In the previous game between the two sides, both teams shared the spoils at Broadhurst with Kurt Willoughby scoring for The Reds.
