1. January weather 1-0 football: Having kicked off 2019 with a comfortable County Cup win the week before, the Reds’ attempt to get some rhythm going following the Christmas break was halted once more after Sunday’s scheduled league fixture at Sir Tom Finney Ladies was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. It means that United head in to February off the back of an unbeaten start to the new year, following the stand-alone win at Sale Ladies FC in the Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup quarter-final.
2. Reds await County Cup draw: Following the 12-0 win at Sale Ladies FC, just over a week ago, Luke Podmore’s side became the first team in to the hat for the semi-finals of this year’s Manchester FA Women’s Challenge Cup, as they attempt to win the trophy for the third successive season. The other two confirmed quarter-final ties see Barrhill Women face Salford City Lionesses, and West Didsbury & Chorlton Women head to Sale United Ladies, on the 17th and 20th February respectively. Manchester Stingers WFC appear to be the other side in to the last four, having been awarded with a quarter-final bye.
3. League break continues for United: The weekend’s postponement now means that the Reds haven’t been in league action since December’s win over Mossley Hill Athletic. United’s seven games in this year’s North West Women’s Regional Premier Division is the lowest tally of league fixtures played by a team in the division this season, with the Reds currently sat in 6th with 18 points from seven games in 2018/19.
4. February’s homecoming: Having not played at Broadhurst Park since 2nd December, United return to familiar surroundings in the next two weeks with the visit of Burscough Dynamo LFC in the Argyle Cup, but first face Manchester Stingers WFC in the league, on Sunday (3rd February). The return to Moston is a welcome sight for Podmore’s side who made it back-to-back calendar years without a defeat on their home patch, in their last outing at Broadhurst before the mid-season break.
5. Fond memories of the Stingers matchup: Last month’s postponement in the reverse fixture means that Sunday will see the two sides meet for the first time since last season’s County Cup final. As a NWWRL Division 1 South side then, United overcame their Premier Division opponents 2-0 on a foggy mid-April night at Brookburn Road, thanks to first-half strikes from Fran Sullivan and captain Kirsty Chambers. The win saw United successfully defend the regional title, that they had won 12 months earlier, in the first and only meeting between the two teams.
