FC United Disability Team Nominated For Team Of The Year Award at MFA Grassroots Awards

FC United Disability Team Nominated For Team Of The Year Award at MFA Grassroots AwardsFC United is pleased to announce the Disability football team has been nominated for team of the year at the MFA Grassroots Awards.

Beginning last summer, coach Tom Conroy, started a drop in PAN Disability session for players over the age of 16 years. The sessions were immediately well attended and began to progress at a much faster rate than first thought.

Within a couple of months the team was playing friendly games and Tom was able to affiliate them to the Manchester FA under the FC United Of Manchester banner – creating the FC United disability team.

Following this, the team were eligible to then able to apply for different funding streams, one being ‘Grow The Game’ which will fund the team over the next 3 years.

The team then entered the Manchester Ability Counts league, their first ever competitive league, which was played on the last Friday of every month at Salford Sports Village.

Due to the high intake of players, we were able to enter two teams into these leagues – FC United Red and FC United White.

In the end FC United White finished fifth and FC United Red finished ninth in their respective leagues - marking a fantastic a debut season from both sets of players.

Disability team manager, Tom Conroy, said: “Positions and results aside, this is a huge achievement from this group of players. To form so quickly and perform in a competitive league is unbelievable.

“This team has done so well in training, league games and friendly games. They show excellent character, sportsmanship and a huge improvement in confidence. This group of players have gone from taking part in a ‘drop in session’ to become a close knit team and mates!

“All this has happened within 12 months which is outstanding. The FC United disability team will continue to work hard and train to be ready to go again next season!???

The results will be announced at the annual Grassroots Awards Dinner on Friday 13 July at the Midland Hotel.
