FC United’s Buildbase FA Trophy dream sunk at Marine

FC United’s Buildbase FA Trophy dream sunk at MarineFC United exited the Buildbase FA Trophy at the first hurdle for the third year running after a poor 1-0 defeat at Marine.

The Reds went into the game confident of progressing against a side from a lower division, but were never at the races and The Mariners fully deserved their victory.

The home side started the quickest and saw a goal-ward shot from Vincent Bailey blocked. They took the lead on 19 minutes when Florian da Silva made a run into the FC box, where he rounded Lloyd Allinson only for the FC custodian to appear to bring him down. The referee Mr Watson had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Danny Mitchley blasted the spot kick home off the underside of the bar.

Marine continued to dominate, Peter Wylie seeing a shot straight at Allinson. At the other end, the only sight of goal was a deflected shot from Tom Walker that Martin Fearon saved smartly.

On 40 minutes, the home side though they had doubled the lead when Billy Smart looped a header into the net, but the officials saw a foul on Allinson.

Seven minute into the second half, Craig Lindfield thought he had equalised when he volleyed from the edge of the box, but Fearon did well to tip the ball away.

On 70 minutes, Marine had a golden chance to score again when Mitchley was tripped in the box. This time, Allinson was equal to the penalty from Mitchley making a smart save.

With 12 minutes left on the clock, FC had a final chance when the ball was chipped into the box, where player manager Tom Greaves met the ball but his back header flew over the bar.

It was a poor overall performance from FC but take nothing away from Marine who deserve to be in the hat for the next round. Time to concentrate on the relegation battle ahead for Greaves and the players.

Website man of the match - Tom Walker. Was lively throughout and looked the only player really on his gam over the 90 minutes.
